I still don't understand why so many people use so many different grades, when the manual seems pretty specific.

I'll bite...
Anyone know the difference in Castrol Edge vs. Castrol Edge European Formula? The European formula has started showing up in local Wally (5W-40) for about $25 for 5 quart jug.

What year was your manual written? Think back to that year. How many M96s had failed? How many in the years since then? Go back and read the first page of this thread for a recent list of Porsche approved oils. Maybe Porsche changed the list as they learned more and oils improved. ...or maybe they benefit from promoting certain products.
