FWIW, I think that everyone here is nice enough that we don't need moderators - everyone here is mostly self-moderated already.
And the few spats that do happen are pretty tame in terms of internet forum vitriol and then someone from Pelican can step in and deal with it.
Its a great forum with great members, let's keep it this way.

I've only been a member of this forum for a few months, but the amount I've learned has been directly inverse to my length of time as a member. I've been blown away not only by the generosity, but by the simple quality of responses. For a Boxster newbie, simply doing a thread search on a topic will yield a near overwhelming amount of information. There are some truly wonderful people here, and I've become so enamored of the enthusiasm you all demonstrate, that I check the forum pretty frequently.
Unfortunately, I've also seen some evidence of abuse. I seem to recall someone mentioning a thread where an individual was actually physically threatened. I also thought I saw something about the threat of a lawsuit over copyrighted information. Please correct me if that didn't happen here, but even if it didn't, I have seen it happen on other forums.
I'm all for free speech -- I spent 20 years in the military defending it. But I'm with JFP: it might be good to have some moderation, if for anything, to protect us from ourselves.

I'm one for self regulation. I participate in this forum and another one that's heavily moderated. Guess which one is less drama.

Normally I am a supporter of free speech. However a moderator might have managed/prevented the escalation of the recent events. The real tragedy is now we may have lost not one but perhaps two valuable members of this community and that is unacceptable.

Moderator for settling a dispute where no money, land, kids or anything tangible is present?.... No moderator is needed. If someone doesnt want to be on this forum...WHO CARES. I know how to get Pedro. Woody and Jake easily as well as Brumos Porsche 10 min. away! I aint scared. I will say any name calling or calling out should be left for in person. Sometimes a punch in the nose solves those problems. I would like to see Partical call out Pedro in person, I am sure there would be no problem then.If it where not for this forum I would have gotten rid of the car long ago so I hope all this info doesnt disappear along with whoever is leaving. I never have seen particle, hell I dont even know what state he is in, however for some reason he doesnt strike me as a physical person because he is so smart, well spoken and so much time to post when to get in shape. Right? Just kidding... Oh my name is Craig and I live in Neptune Beach FL. Bring it on! ha ha

There are other Porsche related forums that function in this way, maintaining a "no nonsense" approach to rules violations. If the latest incident had begun there, it would have quickly been over, with those involved first warned, and then permanently banned (yes, that can be done) if the offense reoccurred. It works well, encourages civil exchanges, and eliminates such unfortunate threads.
Unfortunately, self regulation on internet forums is more of an idealistic concept rather than a reality. We live in a world where it takes locks to keep honest people honest...........

Truth, I don't think we need them. I have acted as a moderator on other forms....I generally left because the moderators started to get an agenda that was always one sided because of favors, or public opinon....I say leave it alone

I agree with points:
The need for moderators is few and far between (at least based on what i've seen here). As mentioned, with few exceptions everyone due to the higher average age of ownership operates with a reasonable level of maturity.
More involvement from newer gen boxster owners would be good. The fact that the forum name has 986 in it however certainly isn't helping this cause obviously. New turbo boxster discussion not welcome though. Just kidding
