The Miata + Big Enchilada is 225hp but also gains 50 lbs-ft of torque low down. Not quite good enough - needs more displacement and space!!

I've owned two NA cars. Both were phenomenal examples of what the Brits had hoped to attain years previously: a car that was simple yet a complete riot to drive - Yet, Mazda succeeded in making the car stone axe reliable.

The engine and gearbox were fantastic and the thing was a go kart with a license plate.

The trunk was a joke, especially when a spare was in it. Manual top was a plus.

Not fair to compare it with a boxster of similar age if you factor in price and upkeep.

One of the things I miss about the NB is the 'arm rest' behind the shifter. The throws were so short you could just flick through the gears with your fingertips.

Same engine? Interior?

I had an NA, the later version w/ the 'big' engine. Sport edition w/ Bilsteins, spoilers. Fun.

There are two cars I new I would buy (at some point) within the first few minutes of a test drive:

1, NA Miata....test drove a slightly used 1990 A package car in early 1991. I had followed the launch of the Miata as a previous owner of X1/9's, Fiat and Alfa Spiders and welcomed the idea of a reliable fun roadster. When the cars first arrived and were all priced above sticker (and sold!), The best I was able to do prior to my test drive was sit in a new one at a dealership. I was slightly disappointed in the overall size of the car and the styling was not exactly what I was used to after Bertone and Pininfarina designed cars.

The test drove put that all to rest. The car was a flat out blast to drive. Power was not an issue to me as the car was just as powerful as the Italian cars I was used to.
In August of 1991, I purchased a used, 4K mile 1990 Silver A package car that had been traded in already by an older enthusiast that fount the car's interior to be to small.
I kept the car for 6+ years and enjoyed it as much the day I sold it to a coworker as the day I bought it. My only reason for selling was the addition of a second child.

I paid $13,400 and sold the car 6 years laterwhen it had just under 50K miles for $8,500. I replaced tires and 1 heater hose during ownership.

The other car that was an immediate "I'm going to buy one of these"? A Boxster S of course!
In 2008, I bought my 2000 S, a few years after that first test drive. It had 76K miles and now has about 130K.
Its the best sports car I've even owned.

Odd that Mazda have to ideal engine for the power/torque mad(like me) but don't use it in the NC ,nor ND Miata .It is the 2.5l turbo from the CX-9:
"produces 250 HP (254 PS) at 5,000 rpm and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque at 2,000 rpm. "
and is capable of more !
