Boxster S 3.2 2001 manual or Boxster 2.7 2004 triptronic

I am almost done for the deal of Boxster S 3.2 2001 manual, and another car came up in my eyes......Boxster triptronic 2004 both cards are black with grey leather almost same mileage 80k.

What are the most reliable engine? what are the differences from 2001 and 2004 in engineering area and in car in general

Manual or triptronic? as weill good question.....

thank you again!!

Both engines have the IMS issue which is probably the scariest problem. They both have common problems with Air oil separators, MAF sensors etc.
The best advice I could give you was what was given to me by a Porsche dealer. If you get the smaller motor you should get the manual. If you get the bigger motor then you can live with either. This was based on making the most of the limited power of the 2.7. Hope this helps.
I have a 2001 S with a manual and I love it.

To me it's as simple as whether or not you like to shift gears. If it'll be daily driver in lots of stop and go traffic I'd go auto, otherwise these cars are a hoot to drive and to me a big part of that is rowing thru the gears. Good luck!

It's worth going for the S, a lot of the S cars have more options then bases too, so it should help make up for the age difference.

The 2.7 is a good enough motor with good enough power, and the tiptronic is a fine auto especially for its time, however, it's worth moving on up for the S.

The glass rear window is nice on the newer car as are the deambered lights and newer tail lights, but I personally don't care for most late model rims.

Essentially what I'm saying is your only benefits for the newer car are cosmetic mostly and to my knowledge the refinement between the two isn't that large.

I noticed a huge difference in refinement between my 1999 2.5 and my 2000 S, however I think after the updates in 2000 they should all feel more solid.

(Not to say the less refined 2.5 was bad btw, it felt much more classic and at times I miss how much more legal it was to go pedal to the floor)

If all other things are equal, it's a no brainer.

Jake's comment about the foot to the floor thing is true.
Warp speed and moving violations come much quicker with the bigger motor and upgraded brakes & suspension. You can't hold your foot down as long driving an S as you can in a base.

thanks for your reply....
could you explain me that part " If you get the smaller motor you should get the manual. If you get the bigger motor then you can live with either. This was based on making the most of the limited power of the 2.7"
I didn't clearly understand the meaning!

how can I identify if the IMS issue is fixed on both cars? what are the MAF sensors?

Does the Autel Maxidiag Elite MD702 diagnositc scanner helps on those??

You can get more action from the smaller motor with a stick. The Tip won't really rev and move the smaller engine like you can with a stick. The bigger engine will move the car much faster with a Tip.

IMS is a visual inspection on motor behind the clutch, or if done proper, a sticker on the door jamb.

MAF is Mass Air Flow sensor. It's in line with air intake.

The scanner just reads and resets check engine lights.

Not sure what you mean by limited power. The 2.7 has tons of power - far more than most other cars on the road. And the Tip is a solid transmission and the manual mode gives it that extra boost.

Seriously, drive both cars and go with the one you prefer. A good PPI should help settle any mechanical challenges.

Manual.

Then S over base.

Then lower miles.

Then newer year.

Then options.

Then color (unless yellow with green interior).
