[edit] Aha! I was driving in "auto mode" most of the time - that seems to explain why I started in 2nd. And, to get back to topic, after google searching - no, I haven't squealed, barked, etc. the tires in most of the cars I've owned. Just not my thing.

The 986, even in auto, will take first. It starts in second, but if you quickly let off the brake and stab the throttle, the car will downshift to first before sending you off the line. It is much more visceral than your usual 2nd gear pull away, so much so that once it sheered two bolts on my cv joint!
Rolling with a manual 6 speed now, first seems longer in the 6 speed.
