Did some work on the 03 yesterday. Tackled one of the vent flaps.

What they dont mention in this link is there is still another one inside the car. If yours is as bad as this one you can see it through the hole for the heater core. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/1183277-repairing-the-black-foam-coming-out-of-vent-issue.html |
Since I had the 03 in the garage and had some time I got around to getting the speakers replaced in the 987 speaker shelf I have had sitting on the table. Put a set of 5 1/2" component speakers in. 1" tweeters replaced the 2.5" speakers and 5 1/4" subs replaced the bose 2 ohm ones. mounted the cross over and replaced the wiring. Just went with a low end set for now to see how it sounds. It's connected as the rear channel on the MBquart NA2-500.5 amp which has the dash connected as the fronts & the same 5 1/4" subs in the door connected to the dedicated sub channel.
Haven't even touched the gain and it is way better then having the 986 shelf with the 3.5" speakers. While the subs are downfacing, it is a sealed system so it does pretty decent, enough to fell the air coming out the front. Still need to get out with the top down to see how it sounds but so far it's a great upgrade. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1627936769.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1627936798.jpg |

He doesn't even mention the other one that can only be done by removing the radio & cutting the duct...or taking the entire dash & hvac out. This one would only fix heat not cooling.

Lots of driving last couple days. Such a fun car!
With the heat up here in the Pacific Northwest, I'm thinking of getting the AC recharged. It's been on my list as part of the refurbishment work, but I think it's moved up the priority list. |
Polished and touched up.my chipped hood. Better but not perfect..

Today I finished replacing the headlights with LED's, installed the roll hoop wind deflectors, installed an USB USB c charger in place of the cigarette lighter and once I realized I deleted the lighter, I installed the pigtail power cord for the Valentine Get 2 accessing the "dome" light. Thanks to Aaron for the top microswitch video about removing the panel. I have had no luck with photos, but I'll try again.

Today we found a barn. A barn find, if you will; and promptly beat the car up in it:

Last week I took apart my dash to double check the wiring and connections for my OBC install. It had been a while since I did the original install, and I broke the emergency flasher switch while removing it, because I didn't squeeze the two tabs on the sides while pulling on it. I found a used one on eBay for $18.55 delivered including sales tax, better than the $70 cost for a new one and ordered it. Today I went for a ride in my Boxster with no emergency flasher switch. Fun fact I learned, the turn signals don't work if there is no flasher switch installed on a 2003! At first I panicked, thought I was going to have to pull everything apart again, and then realized there was no flasher switch installed, and the wipers, OBC and cruise control all worked, and I thought that could be the reason for no turn signals. Got back home and UPS had delivered my new (used) switch. Popped it in and voila, the turn signals work again!

I installed a lawn/garden battery housed in a aluminum battery box I designed and built. I used an 8mm rivet nut to secure the battery box to the tray on the opposite side of the factory tray holes. Cut out almost 20 lbs.:D Battery is U1-3 with 350 cca. Turns the car over better than the old boat anchor I pulled out of it. https://i.ibb.co/Pj5pSz2/FB417-BFE-8...B383-BC5-C.jpg https://i.ibb.co/MDQfxb9/2-E528-C93-...38-F009226.jpg |
Finally got around to color matching my side vents and mud guards.

My son and I...
I'm happy to say that everything is working and I believe replacing the ignition switch assembly fixed the issue where the car would honk the horn once when you locked it (indicating something was open still). My guess is that it wasn't happy with the radio connection as the radio would sometimes stop working and it looks like the ignition may have fixed that. |
Finally picked up the hardtop, color matches not to bad to the car 20 year old paint.http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1629727123.jpg

Got a new expansion tank installed. Old one gave up two weeks ago at the Porsche Club Finland race. This coming weekend I'll try the new expansion tank at the next race

Got my car smogged today, but before I got it, I had to take off the hardtop since they like to look under the top then I took it for a brisk drive around the city to get it warmed up and hot. Passed with flying colors and now I can get my tags.

I had a luxury to take my car a day before to friends car shop to cool down and I did the work there on following day with proper tools and a profesional lift. Also, to take out the factory installed hose connectors from the engine side, I had a friends pair of hands to use the hose connector removal tool to get those compressed hose clips out (very difficult location). Not a nice job to do without a proper workshop lift and tools... |
I've been slowly doing a few cosmetic changes... Finished up a few projects this weekend - 996 faux headlight setup, aftermarket seat install (using factory sliders, I wrote up the diy if anyone is interested) and put in a quick release hub with flat bottom steering wheel (I forgot to take a pic but will post if anyone is interested). Now to clean up the wiring and look of the center bits and finish the dash up.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...811bf009fc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c917e66208.jpg

Did the air filter, first time I was in the top of the engine. Not a big deal after watching a video.
Also did cabin air filter today. Planning an oil change but wife took the car to run around. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3f36010a_c.jpg |
Not me, but this made me chuckle because you know that guy is out there... https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c9b0b32d39.jpg

Yesterday I: Ripped off the rear bumper, Cut part of the bent exhaust off with a Sawzall, Blew my front struts, and eventually seized the engine. It was the most fun I've had in a Boxster Ever.

Jon and Woody are out tearing through the desert in their Boxsters, cutting them up with Sawzalls, blowing up engines and having a great time.
Meanwhile I'm afraid to get a speck of dust on mine. |
