The Porsche supplied VIN data is sorted by model year with 01 on the top and 05 on the bottom. The three ranges you questioned are for 02, 04 and 05 models respectively.

The Prius uses NiMH, not lithium ion batteries. Toyota has a program to encourage extraction/reuse of the nickel in the batteries, but yes, lots and lots will end up buried.
