No need to take either the glass or the regulator out to access the lock assembly containing the microswitch. You just have to get the window in the correct position for easy access.

One caution: Unless you have access to a PST2, PIWIS or Durametric be careful not to set off the airbag light when the door is apart and the door airbag is disconnected. '97's normally don't have a side airbag, but perhaps if yours is a late build, etc...

Regards, Maurice.

Mine does not have the Airbag badge on the door so I am guessing I have an early model. Should be fine.

I had this problem last year. As others have said, you definitely need to replace the door lock assembly. The problem is a microswitch inside the latch assembly, but you can't get the switch by itself. I tried lubricating it with no luck and then replaced the door lock assembly. It was a DIY for me.
The part is called the 'Door Lock Mechanism', and is available at: http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/PEL_search.cgi?command=show_part_page&please_wait=N&make=POR&model=986M&section=INTpnl&page=1&bookmark=4&part_number=8N1-837-015-C-M100
I got mine at the local dealer for a few $ more, but it was worth it to get it done the same day.

You will need a special type of wrench called '12 point triple square' to remove the part from your door, but I found a set at the local O'Reilly Auto for not much $. It is used to remove the 2 bolts visible on the door jamb part of the door.

Good luck with the repair!

Thanks for the information. I will order the part and get right on it. I was just going to ask about the tools needed.

On top of this my ignition switch seems to be going out on me. Car electronics turn on but the ignition takes a few turns back and forth to make the car start. Ugh

Just did this repair with help from the Pelican Parts page - it wasn't easy, but it's done! Saved hours of labor costs and learned more about my BXTR

I had the same problem. I replaced the door latch mechanism on my 97 Boxster. It did not cure the problem. When I pull on either the inside or outside handle and open the door the interior lights go on but when I let go of either handle the window pops back up. I know the micro switches are working on both handles and the latch switch is working because the interior lights come on. Any Ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks, I will yank off the door panel and check the wires. I am running out of options @ this point.
