6th gear

I have read many threads on RPM's but I'm curious as to when everyone runs 6th gear? There is nothing but 55 mph zones around me with more troopers then trees. In order to keep the RPM's around or above 3k I can't make it out of 5th in my 00 S. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Trade your 00 S model for a 00 base model.

Around town I barely get out of 4th. The only time I hit 6th is on the interstate at 70+. And sometimes I run there in 4th too just because it sounds and feels so good

I don't know. Move to were there are higher speed limits and/or less cops. I hear Germany has this thing called the autobahn..

Seriously, I only use 6th on the freeway were the speed limit is 65 and going 75 put you below the speed of half the cars on the road so a ticket is unlikely. Funny thing was I tested a 05 base before getting the S and on the freeway I found myself wanting the grab 6th. Guess I was used to my GTI which had DSG. That car would be in 4th by the time I got across the intersection. If I left it in full automatic it went straight to 6th even at 40 mph.

Spend a day at your local racetrack. You'll learn some good driving techniques and have an opportunity to use 6th gear without fear of heavy fines!

i owned my S for almost 3 years.
used the 6th gear only twice.
once when i bought the car, just to check if it works.
and second time when i sold it, just to show the buyer it works.

For me its about 70-72 (speedo = actual 66-68 mph) and then cruise @ 75 on a typical 65 zone. That puts the RPMs a shade under 3 grand. If I go under 70 then back to 5th or if uphill stretch

6th gear is really for going over 120.

I live with the keep it over 2000 RPM minimum philosophy. I also use the 1 gear for every 10 MPH for easy cruise. And whale on it whenever I can.
