Fill plug is no problem but without drilling a hole, you have to remove the metal plate completely to get to the drain plug. Its just a time saving thing. Removing the plate isn't that big a deal and gear oil is a 90K mile maintenance item. If you plan to keep your car a long long time, drill the hole!
