OBC addition Cables

Well I am on my way, I made up my first cabels for sale today. These simplify adding the OBC function to your Boxster . They have the actual pins that fit your Instrument cluster plug , so no forcing in a "molex" or other pin that could ruin your harness. These pins are the OEM pins that fit perfectly. All cables are hand soldered, Ohmed out, Hand wrapped to give you a complete harness that will blend in with your factory wiring. I apologise for the poor wrapping on the white harness, it was my first and I will correct. I have already designed a bench jig to assist in the wrapping procedure. All connections are soldered and crimped.

You will still have to have the OBC function enabled by a dealer or using other diagnostic software like Durametric.

Thanks
Dwight

Dwight,

I have a 2004 S with a Tiptronic.
Not sure what switch to use, I'll listen to all recommendations.

Gift sent moments ago.

Pdwight 07-10-2014 06:11 PM

Not sure

I have not done a switch conversion, just put together a harness for it. The harness has 3 wires, one is ground, one is reset and the other is scroll. MOst use a spoiler switch from a 996. I Have a window switch on its way to me and I will run some tests and see what I can uncover.

Nine8Six 07-10-2014 07:13 PM

Clean work, cool and easy mod! Like it

Kind of you to offer this to other members. You actually made me realized not long ago that the four stalk thing was an option. Never knew lol

Pdwight 07-11-2014 07:50 AM

Thanks Everyone

all cables ordered are in the mail on convenience day (7/11):)

Got mine today too, excellent workmanship Dwight! Much better than I ever could have done.

PD,

Still waiting for arrival. Did it go UPS or USPS?

Pdwight 07-15-2014 02:30 PM

Usps

I ship all cables out via the Post Office in a padded envelope.

Should be there soon

Hey ... I'm a 996 guy who lurks here every now and then -- a few months ago I started reading the Nine8Six/Particlewave thread on headlights and it was all downhill from there ;-).

Anyway, I just ran across this thread. I've been meaning to do the OBC mod on my car but never had any interest in hacking apart some connectors to make the wiring harness. So this might be just the thing for me.

I already have the four-stalk column switch (PN 996.613.219.10) ... got it used and it came with all the covers and whatnot. Are your cables all that I would need to complete the install?

Also, can anyone verify that the pinout for a 1999-2000 996 is the same as a 1997-2000 Boxster? It looks like it, according to Pelican. The 996 pinout is:

Connector Pin #2 --> Gauge Cluster Pin #20 ... Select Mode Down
Connector Pin #3 --> Gauge Cluster Pin #21 ... Speed Alert/Gong
Connector Pin #4 --> Gauge Cluster Pin #22 ... Select Mode Forwards
Connector Pin #5 --> Gauge Cluster Pin #25 ... Select Mode Backwards

Thanks!

Deserion 07-16-2014 04:10 AM

Just sent my funds for the column stalk wire setup for my '04. Thanks!

BruceH 07-16-2014 12:54 PM

I got mine installed today. I didn't remove the steering wheel. I disconnected the stalk from the 4 stalk that I bought and installed it onto my current 3 stalk. I had the OBC activated and everything works great! Thanks Dwight for making these harnesses, excellent quality and makes this mod so much easier.

Pdwight 07-16-2014 01:10 PM

Kob

That pinout should be correct, you would simply need a 4 stalk harness, (Most humbly) my harness takes out over half the work of doing this.

Dwight

MitchSF 07-16-2014 06:26 PM

I just installed mine today too, along with the 4 stalk assembly. I realized after it was installed, that I could have just transferred the OBC stalk. I'll keep the old assembly around just in case.

Dwight's cable made this modification a lot easier. Definitely worth the money.

rdass623 07-17-2014 07:13 PM

great job Dwight...

I received my harness today and installed it in about an hour (nice day and wasn't rushing). everything went in smooth as silk. the version I used was the poor man's version, with an old window switch in the dash to scroll through the functions. in my opinion it is the only way to go. doing so alleviates the need to disassemble the column and remove the steering wheel.

I had so much time left over, I decided to upgrade my speakers. the old ones were shot. the suspension had completely deteriorated to the point where the cones were not supported by the frames at all. now all I need is a wiring harness adapter to install a new amp.

I don't guess you make those Dwight, do you?

Pdwight 07-17-2014 07:27 PM

Get me specs

Tell me what size wires, how long...what connectors....how many and I will make anything

BFeller 07-18-2014 09:02 PM

I was bored @ 10:30 pm tonight. The OBC Stalk got installed. Works like a charm. I did the install without removing the steering wheel. Since there already was cruise control it meant that the stalk for the OBC could be added to the three stalk assembly that was already in place. The top trim pice for the column had to be removed. It was easy to do by rotating the steering wheel to accessmthe screws holding it in place behind the wheel, along with extending the adjustment of the column to its longest position for access to the trim screws on the side. If any one else is confused as to what plug the new wires go into it is the center plug. Less than two hours later it was buttoned up and out for test drive.

heliguy 07-19-2014 06:01 AM

Does this harness activate the cruise control if I install the 4-stalk on my '03?

Crutchfield has the speaker wiring adapters .
I made a adaptor plate for replacement dash speakers. PM me and I will send you the template pattern

pdwelch2000 07-19-2014 04:52 PM

I have a 2001 S with cruise. What would I need to do this conversion?

Just the cable?

Thank you,

Patrick.

not sure about the 01 model, but on the 00 model, the harness and a window switch was all that I needed. pelican has a write up on it's website. also you will need to have the computer turned on, it can be done at the dealer or with durametric software if you have it.

actually what I did was cut the suspension from the rings on the old speakers, leaving the connectors on the rings and soldered it to the lugs on the new speakers. I then used the rings from the old speakers to clamp the new ones in place using the original hardware. but thanks for the advice. if you know of a source for a wiring harness adapter to install an aftermarket amp, I would appreciate that.

Pdwight 07-19-2014 08:37 PM

Pdwelch

You Have two options on the OBC;

You can do a 4 stalk and a 5 wire harness that will look completely factory, hard part is sourcing a 4 stalk switch.

Poor Man's as it has been come to be called is to use a window switch and a 3 wire harness.

In either case you will have to have a dealer or someone with a Durametric turn on the OBC function.

I ran across another 4 stalk switch assembly for a good price at iwantaporsche.com

Let me know if I can help
Dwight

I bought a 4 stalk from Oklahoma Foreign which sells on eBay. I also have a 2001 S with cruise so I removed the OBC stalk from the one I bought and put it on my original 3 stalk. Then I ran the wires from Dwight's harness up to the cluster. I had my local shop activate the OBC for $50. Everything works as advertised. Keep an eye on Oklahoma foreign since the stalks come up on a fairly regular basis or you could contact them directly. I bought mine for $129.

I got a lot of request for the template, so rather than sending a bunch of emails, I posted it as a DIY
