Finally got everything installed, 4th stalk in place and buttoned up. Connected the Durametric, activated the OBC.........FAIL. :troll:

Could not get the correct number of bytes back from the OBC plus I received a fault code of 5555.

I am confused. Do I need to go to the dealer and have the factory code turned on with the PIWIS(?).

Pdwight 05-13-2015 08:53 AM

Perhaps not a fail

I had the same situation when I did my install, I drove to another members home and he had a PIWIS (spelling?)and it still did no good. What it turned out to be was a connection. Double check the connector you inserted the pins into at the back of the instrument panel, make double sure it is completely plugged in all the way...easy to have it askew .

Also be sure none of your pins pushed out of the connector....if you saw the triangles they should stay in place.

Next thing to try is the actual 4 stalk, I had a cold solder joint in the OBC lever on the ground.....easy to "Ohm" this lever out.

Let me know if I can ever help

Dwight

eicheldp 05-14-2015 02:51 PM

Dwight,
Took it apart and put it back together.....It now works.

Go figure.

Thanks for all your help & you too Bruce. The harness worked great.
One word of advice to all who want to do this hack. Put the top down first. Life will be much easier. Ask me how I know.

Don

BruceH 05-14-2015 03:00 PM

Glad to see you got it working Don! Happy to help:cheers:

Where is the connector where the pins go in?

Pdwight 05-20-2015 07:14 PM

The connector on the back of the instrument cluster

This is the first I have seen of this. Cool that i can activate the OBC on my 2001 S. I have a 3 stalk so is there another place where I an look at step by step procedure for the upgrade?

Also, do I need to buy a 4 stalk?

Generally, it is tough to buy just the stalk. I bought a 4 stalk and removed the OBC stalk from it and installed the stalk on my OEM 3 stalk. Then run Dwight's harness from there to the gauge cluster. Pelican has a good DIY guide with pictures. You will then have to have your computer activated. I went to my local indie mechanic who charged me $50. The stalk ran $129 from Oklahoma Foreign on eBay.

Here is a cheap 4 stalk with faded lettering I saw on eBay today. No relation to the seller.

Faded letters are meaningless as it's just a little cap that pops off and is easily replaced

Truth

And this is a deal

apswater 07-01-2015 07:29 PM

Received cables today. Beautiful. Thanks Dwight.

Pdwight 07-13-2015 07:46 PM

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words

amitmishra4 07-15-2015 05:42 AM

Embarrassing but I want to do this enough to say - I lost the instructions that came with my cable(dash switch version) and I don't know exactly how to install it. Has anyone done any install instructions that I missed? I know there was some talk about this.

Pdwight, do you have any pics that you can share for the likes of me please? :)

Thanks.

rick3000 07-15-2015 06:50 AM

If you PM your email, I can send you a PDF of the original build/install instructions from yosief.

01BOXYS 09-11-2015 10:42 AM

Has anyone installed using the dash switches to control the OBC features? When reading the instruction on the Pelican website it states "To use this switch with the OBC, wire pins 2,3,4,5 from the table above to pins 1 and 2 of two different switches, and then connect the green ground wire to pin 4 of both switches." - This would mean you need 2 switches correct? Would you also need two of the white harnesses from Dwight?

I think you need 2 switches to simulate "up-down" and "front-rear".
1 harness should suffice, like for the stalk addition.

Thanks for clarifying.

Have to be honest with you

I would go with a 4 stalk, they just do not cost that much and look factory...you can do it with one switch and just step through the displays...I can make you as harness either way you go.

Thanks

Dwight

01BOXYS 09-11-2015 07:50 PM

Would someone be able to confirm that the OBC stalk from a 4 stalk part number 99661321910 for a 911 or a 996 would work for the 986?

EJ-Fresno 09-11-2015 07:52 PM

Yes, they should work for the 986.

apswater 09-16-2015 07:20 PM

The OBC full parts list can be found here. I just did mine and t works great.

Dwight, I sent you a PM.

Harness

Hello,
Are you still selling this?
Would it be possible to make a harness that goes to 2 switches?
Rj thomas
rj.thomas93@gmail.com

Pdwight 11-19-2015 09:19 PM

Yes, I am still making these. So you want 5 conductors with leads for two switches ?

Would you simply like push on female crimp connectors (I will of course solder as well as crimp)

rj.thomas93 11-19-2015 09:30 PM

Yes, I think so. So that would be 4 signal and 1 ground leads?
Yes push on crimps are great for the switch end.
