2 piece rims
Kinda new at owning a 986 with two piece rims. Question is does the rim have to come apart to have new tires installed. From what I can tell, the two piece is a inner piece that mounts to the entire outer rim. Not like a Hummer where the two halves ( sorta) mount together. Just trying to figure out if my usual shop can do the work or do I need to find a indy Porsche shop.

pic of rim and car. Not even sure if they are original to the 2000 986
absolutely no idea how to rotate. Atleast I got the size pretty good.

2 piece rim
I have rims that are similar and I believe they are only aesthetic in nature not actually a 2 piece rim???

No you just need a good tire mounter with decent equipment. Those are optional wheels made for Porsche by BBS. Just make sure you have no air leaks now. That stainless steel band around the rim can be removed & replaced or repaired if it gets dented.
I assume the Hummer has split rims which is 2 halves joined together like a 18 wheeler truck.

They are factory two piece BBS wheels, cost about $550 each:

The 17" version is a single piece wheel. The 18" ones are made by BBS and called Sport Classic II.

The 18" Sport Classic wheels by BBS were an option on the 986 and 996. I had a set on my 996. They are really nice looking but a complete PITA to clean (lots of little nooks and crevices).
You never take them apart unless there is a problem. There is no maintenance. New tire installation, mounting, and balancing is done normally just like any single piece wheel.

Paul, when I say you pic the first thing I thought was looks like Wis. I was born and raised in lower Wis and visit family often. But military service kept me in the Carolina's and stayed after I retired.

Yeah, I'm learning something new.
I've seen a set of those that were clearly cosmetic only, not a true 2-pc.
Looks like, reading below, the 17's were cosmetic, where the 18's were true 2-pc.
And there we are.

The 17" version of the split Sport Design and Sport Classic are not cosmetic as such. They don't have fake bolts. They are simply a single piece wheel with the same wheel face design.

What purpose do those bolts serve?

Then why did you say this:
"The 17" version of the split Sport Design and Sport Classic are not cosmetic as such. They don't have fake bolts. They are simply a single piece wheel with the same wheel face design."
Are the 17's 2-pc or not? (The ones I've seen are not). And if they are NOT, then what purpose do the bolts serve? "Cool", as starter986 said. Which makes them merely cosmetic, as I said.
Right?
What am I missing here?

The 17" version has no bolts real or fake. They are a single piece wheel. The 18" ones have proper bolts.

Nah, the ones I was looking at had bolts around 'em. But definitely a 1pc wheel.

Sounds like they were aftermarket wheels then.
