Window tint

Anyone have any secrets to putting tint on a 986? I did today and am taking off tomorrow to try again. The angle where the mirror attaches really gave me a hard time. Also, so bubbles appeared later that weren't there earlier. I think I really need to make a template out of cardboard for that angle and start there.

Go on youtube and watch some videos on how to tint the windows. I just bought some 90% IR 38% VLT Premium UV Blocking Shatterproof Nano Ceramic Window Tint and a window tinting installation tool kit.

I think after watching the videos I'm ready to go on this endeavor.

It's easiest to take the glass out and do it. It only takes a few minutes to get it out.

Once out, you can use tons of water. Lay the glass flat and douse it and the back of the film with water (I actually used a running hose...even better if you have a tub filled with water and the glass submerged). Once the film is positioned, use your squeegee to force the water out. Let it set for 5 minutes, then use a scribe blade to trim around the edge, leaving a 3-5mm reveal (the reveal will keep the film from peeling at the edge from rubbing the weather stripping).

Doing it with lots of water allows you to position it better and prevents air bubbles and trapped debris.

My tint guy does the side windows for $25 each. Done.

Lol pw. I might save $25 doing the tint myself, but that's not the reason I'm doing it. It's for fun, plus learning the skill and if it turns out good, it will give me satisfaction in a job well done by me, not by someone else.

of course its fun to do stuff yourself. I have applied tint in the past, but found that the secret is use a tint guy. Also use the best film you can out there; some really good choices and a tint shop with high ratings will steer you right. I use 3M™ Automotive Window Film Crystalline Series. It isn't dark, yet rejects the heat and UVs...its amazing and my installer guarantees it for life, even if I scratch it.

While having the window out would make it easier, taking the window out isn't trivial either... you have to work around the airbag, make sure you don't disconnect it with the battery connected (you need to visit the dealer for resets after that) It takes 20 to 40 minutes a door in removal, another 20 - 40 minutes to replace.

Doesn't look that hard to do as long as you have the right tools. Check out this video, no door frame around the window, like our cars.
