Overpriced Oil Filters

I stopped by the Porche Dealer to get a oil drain plug; mine has the 10mm hex stuck and can't get it out.

Price for factory oil drain plug and washer = <$20.00 (~14. and change)

Price for factory oil filter $40.00! Fortunately they were out.

What oil filter have you used that is as good as factory and what was the price?

invest in....

...the spin-on oil filter adapter and use Napa Gold filters.

You can find the same filter on pelican parts or amazon for $10.

Mahle is a good brand.
The spin on adaptor is a good investment.

My last oil filter buy was some of these:


Oil Filter Cover Cap 99610702055 - Genuine Porsche - 996-107-020-55 | Pelican Parts
Filter and new housing, $25. Not sure how long the housing is supposed to be good for, but if you have an original and don't want to convert to spin-on, it's a good idea to replace it periodically.
Also bought Hengst and Mann filters for ~$10 ea

I got mine oil filter (for 986) on Official Dealer for 24€ (excluding labor). It was the genuine part.

Wix or Napa Gold 7211 is the best cartridge filter in my opinion, about $10 USD. It has plastic end caps, unlike the paper ones that will sometimes disintegrate.

Where are you getting Napa Gold 7211 oil filters for $10? I have not been able to find them for less then $20.

I started buying K&N Pro Series 7011 oil filters. Get them off eBay shipped for under $10.

The Napa Gold one is the same as the Wix 57211, looks like the Wix are $15 on Amazon, or $12 at Rock Auto. Prices may have gone up a bit since I switched to a spin on oil filter a few years ago.

Genuine filter/ housing for $20 at Sunset, seems exceptional deal when they sell just a filter for $18. I still have the original housing so will buy this next time.

I can search but what's the benefit of spin-on? With factory setup it's easy to check for debris that may be a sign of IMSB or other internal issues, no need to cut up the filter housing.

+1 on below and the fact it includes a filter. This was my first and only actual Porsche part I have bought to date. I'm thinking of framing the Porsche original equipment box it came in

Typically I use NAPA Gold around $19. I like them because the core is plastic not fiber and I can buy locally

I cannot imagine those spin ons have the flow rate of the larger cartridge....but hey what do German engineers know.

I tend to stick to factory as much as possible, but look for deals while remaining with factory specs. Many Boxsters have exceeded 6 figure mileage and still running strong without significant mods; do others with significant mods last that long w/out having to rebuild or have major engine issues?

Besides using a standard cartridge removal wrench, isn't there a plus to the spin on filters in the area of deleting the bypass valve thus removing the possibility of particle-contaminated oil bypassing the filter? Not cheap though for the initial fitting.

I wonder why J.R.and many others recommend a filter conversion kit ?
Maybe there is a reason - or 2...
But treat yourself to a tool(Longacre#77750) to open the casing so you can inspect for debris

Here's why I converted....

...I bought my 2004 Boxster S "50 Years of 550 Spyder Edition" in 2015.


My first Porsche after owning a Miata for 25 years.

I immediately shipped the car to Jake Raby of Flat 6 Innovations and had him perform his "Level 3" package of preventative maintenance.

This involved a new water pump, new rear main seal, new Air/Oil Separator, new cam chain tensioners, new spark plugs, and the....wait for it....."IMS Solution".

Part of his "IMS Solution" is a spin-on oil filter adapter.

As part of the service, he provides a list os "approved" spin-on oil filters that have passed his scientific oil flow tests.

The Napa "Gold" filter is one of the best. I asked Jake, "Wouldn't the Platinum filter be better than the Gold filter?" He replied, "The Gold flows better in our testing."

There ya go.

Jeff in PA knows of what he posts.

Just do it.

P.S.
Yes, the bypass valve bypass is also a huge plus.

Just be aware that the IMS Solution uses a different type of filter with an internal bypass, while the standard spin on adaptor uses a “full flow” filter without an internal bypass. The reason for this is that Jake discovered in his testing of the Solution design that the solid bearings benefited from the bypass under extreme cold conditions, while the ball bearing design IMS did not need it.

What is the LocTite for? If you are putting it on the spin on adaptor, that is a mistake.

The adaptor does not need either sealant or thread locker.
