Overpriced Oil Filters
I stopped by the Porche Dealer to get a oil drain plug; mine has the 10mm hex stuck and can't get it out.
Price for factory oil drain plug and washer = <$20.00 (~14. and change) Price for factory oil filter $40.00! Fortunately they were out. What oil filter have you used that is as good as factory and what was the price? |

...the spin-on oil filter adapter and use Napa Gold filters.

You can find the same filter on pelican parts or amazon for $10.

Wix or Napa Gold 7211 is the best cartridge filter in my opinion, about $10 USD. It has plastic end caps, unlike the paper ones that will sometimes disintegrate.

The Napa Gold one is the same as the Wix 57211, looks like the Wix are $15 on Amazon, or $12 at Rock Auto. Prices may have gone up a bit since I switched to a spin on oil filter a few years ago. :cheers:

+1 on below and the fact it includes a filter. This was my first and only actual Porsche part I have bought to date. I'm thinking of framing the Porsche original equipment box it came in

Here's why I converted....
...I bought my 2004 Boxster S "50 Years of 550 Spyder Edition" in 2015.
My first Porsche after owning a Miata for 25 years. I immediately shipped the car to Jake Raby of Flat 6 Innovations and had him perform his "Level 3" package of preventative maintenance. This involved a new water pump, new rear main seal, new Air/Oil Separator, new cam chain tensioners, new spark plugs, and the....wait for it....."IMS Solution". Part of his "IMS Solution" is a spin-on oil filter adapter. As part of the service, he provides a list os "approved" spin-on oil filters that have passed his scientific oil flow tests. The Napa "Gold" filter is one of the best. I asked Jake, "Wouldn't the Platinum filter be better than the Gold filter?" He replied, "The Gold flows better in our testing." There ya go. Jeff in PA knows of what he posts. Just do it. P.S. Yes, the bypass valve bypass is also a huge plus. :cheers: |
