				Best no drone exhaust?

I read from many of you about the droning issue related to many after market exhaust systems and a few that have indicated that they have setup that is not too loud at full song and quite when cruising with no dreaded drone between 2k and 3k rpms. I am looking to swap out the stock set up (too quite compared to my old 964 with cat deletes and dual outlets) for something a little more visceral but no drone. I'd also like to delete the second cats and hopefully get a few more horses and better throttle response out of the deal. I've read that the top speed cat delete and muffler set up gets the job done. True? What about other setups that you can vouch for?

			1) Top Speed headers.
2) Top Speed cat delete pipes.
3) Standard S muffler.

Very quiet below 3,500rpm (so my wife says - we can still have a conversation), but by 4,000rpm it gets quite - er - loud.....especially with the hood down.
Fitted strait up, cheap power gain, good quality and no CEL's, but I'm ROW with only O2 sensors in the delete pipes.

I have an 01 S and did the Top Speed muflers, and they droned at about 2700rpm, so I added the TopSpeed 2nd cat deletes and the drone is gone and the exhaust sounds awesome without being too loud.

However and unexpected and even nicer benefit is the nearly instant throttle response that makes the car leap off the line, and the power comes on much faster.

Shifting aggressively into 2nd can even squawk the tires. It makes the engine feel more powerful.

Not sure if there iz more HP but it certainly feels good and adds to the funfactor.

I highly recommend it and at only $500 its a worthwhile upgrade.

Do the underdrive pulley as well and you will get some more hp as well.

UD pulley is next on my list.

			Jake,
You sir are correct.
I installed the Top Speed with the Cat Delete pipes.
I like the sound. Personal Preference. It's a Sports Car.

Not to share Jake's secrets but be he privately told me along time ago that some cheap eBay headers and a stock muffler made the best power. I followed his advice and just added Fabspeed highflow cats, headers and my stock muffler and couldn't be happier. I do have many different mufflers and if I feel like being obnoxious I may switch in a loud one for a month or so.

Nothing wrong with the stock exhaust except the lack of sound. Even my mother commented that the car is so quite. I don't expect hp with another system unless you delete the cats.

This sounds like a good options. Fab speed tend to be a little pricey but they tend to offer quality pieces. What is the sound like? Does keeping the stock muffler eliminate drone with the combo you have?

Hell, I create 4.0 liter engines and keep the stock muffler in some instances. The stock exhaust is one of the more superior OEM pieces of these cars.

Seldom do we find power with exhaust system mods outside of the removal of cats, which held any engine.

Yes, my Wife holds 5 Land Speed records in a 996 and they were gained with a set of 79 dollar headers and a fully stock exhaust beyond them.

To me, the best sound is the one you can't hear. Thats why I love building sleepers that look and sound stock and are true Wolves in Sheep's clothing... No bling, no image, all business.

Jake. Please start development on the Boxster exhaust solution. . Musts are power gains, some beautiful piping and tips and valves for sound when needed! Granted Capristo I believe has done this but way over priced.

What we'd build wouldn't sell to the modern Porsche following. I build for efficiency and accept no compromise when developing it. From what I see the sound and the bling are way too heavily considered for us to ever offer an exhaust system.

We've built many headers over the years, but none were created for sound, or looks, and no, you'll never see a blue titanium exhaust tip roll out of our facility! Hell, even the exhaust we built for Cayman X (see page 66 of last month's Panorama) didn't bling, or create some spectacular sound. The 4.2L DFI engine makes it's statement without any assistance.

I get the wolf in sheep's cloth. I have a debadged 03 E55 (the descendant to your E500) with some tuning and the exhaust is stock. Nothing is more fun then seeing a guys face that thinks he's got a fast muscle car get smoked by what he thought was a 10 year old family sedan or taking someone for a ride and hitting the gas.

Don't care about bling from an exhaust system. I want it to be efficient (and sound good without being obnoxious) and out of sight. Any car I own where you see anything but the exhaust tip it get painted black using high temp paint and that includes the Boxster.

BTW - I read the article on the Cayman X. Awesome car. Your motor give the Cayman the power it desires. I'd pick this car over anything that Porsche offers new.

Yes, I trust the factory engineers know more than us.

You can buy a 2014 with a Raby engine off the showroom floor at Isringhausen Porsche... Or you can order one from them with the same engine :-)

This holds true with the exhaust and a couple of other things, but these are the same Engineers that fitted the engine with an IMS Bearing that we all know about. Trust that the engineering department is managed by accountants today.
