That 2.7 intake is killing the potential of that engine. The 2.7 intake is inadequate even for a 2.7 engine.
The 3.2 plenums look to be the same size as the 2.7s. They look to be an even smaller volume than the 2.5s....squashed down. The 3.4 plenums look voluminous by comparison...going by pictures. The entrance into the 3.4 plenums are larger too
One has to wonder what the 3.4s would do atop a 3.2
that would be the ultimate intake conversion then ...
987 air box - $250 used
987 engine cover - $100 used
996 3.4 intake manifold - $250 used
997 plenum - $50 new (you could use the 996 plenum, but one assumes the 997 part is an improvement)
996/997/987 throttle body - $100 used
987 maf housing - $100 jobber
$850.
get a softronic tune that let's you use a 987 maf housing - $700 on sale (or $50 labour at your local indy if a 996 3.4 x51 row pre-variocam+ tune will work).
finally, a $500 performance exhaust (topspeed or 987 S take-off) and a $200 underdrive pulley.
so, potentially 300 hp bolt-on (+50) for $1,600 to $2,250 - worth it?
I tried to get softronic to give me a cayman MAF housing tune to no avail.
Bump on this thread. I just switched motors back from a 3.4 to a 3.2 and I don't notice any real difference in power. I have a 3.4 intake, 987 air box,4 inch pulley, 996 ROW tune, headers and custom made exhaust. I question why Porsche even bothered with building a 3.4.
that is what i am running (except the 996 intake manifold - i just have the 997 plenum) and the full top speed catless exhaust. i found that the 996 tune really opened up the car. i can run with 987.1 caymans on the straights now. how was the fit for the 996 intake manifold - you had to tap the head and add additional bosses yes? i would expect the longer runners would add some torque.

i won't make any quantifiable claims given the following caveats:
- i have no dyno results.
- my changes are done in batches (ie, new tune was done with new exhaust, new intake was done with udp, etc.) so i can't comment on how i can attribute improvements to one specific change or another.
- new exhaust is lighter, so is the benefit in power or weight reduction?
- my changes get done in the winter, with track and maintenance work in the summer, so i cant really provide 'back to back' comparison.
- the butt dyno is an inaccurate thing, easily fooled by engine sound, change in throttle curve, etc.
regardless, first and second gear now feel much more powerful when just hooning around on the street. power gets down harder on turn out (had to relearn a few things ...) and i was hanging with an instructor in a 987.1 cayman running r7s (i was on nt01s) so am happy with the results. i was tracking my trims before/after the change (the 996 tune allows me to run a cayman maf holder with my cayman airbox and removes the last restriction in my intake with 997 plenum and 74 mm throttlebody) and everything trimmed out well within specs (idle trims were naturally a bit higher but low load was fine). butt dyno says that the 996 tune brought back some torque. aside: this may make sense, as the 996 appears to be set up for more torque than the 986 - intake runners are longer, and the rear engine layout is better disposed to getting the power down earlier.
otherwise, the full sino-exhaust without any cats is an earful but DOES mellow over time. fit and finish was satisfactory and a black ceramic finish does reduce temps (and looks mean). the cacaphony is added to by the fact that i removed all the insulation where the roof sits (and remove the two engine carpets when at the track). not so much louder but more mechanical clicks and clacks from the engine. made even more noticeable by rennline transmission mounts. shifting DRAMATICALLY improved with the mid-level rubbers (didn't expect it, but noticably better engagement on an otherwise stock shifter, cables, etc,) and only minor increase in noise/vibration. i have some function first inserts for the engine mount as well, so we will see if stiffer engine and transmission mounts are too much in combination. regardless, the whole setup is still very streetable, even with the coilovers on full stiff - i've found that i can run my stiff suspension on the street if i use 17" wheels (the taller sidewall adds some play to the whole setup).
final steps - thinking 996 intake runners. there should be enough headroom with the 987 engine cover, but don't really want to tap the heads, and would have to figure out how to deal with the fuel rails.

Jaykay, another downside of using stiffer engine and transmission mounts is the possibility that the knock sensor may read the vibration as detonation, therefore will be retarding the timing...
The Rennline ones are pricey wow! They give you the ability to soften and adjust if needed. It looks like there are various inserts with differing hysteresis characteristics.
Not sure how one would adjust once they are in there without a lot of work
I've got the Wevo trans mounts combined with OEM engine mount. Very nice, the trans mounts add a little bit of vibration at idle, like a massager, but I didn't notice any additional NVH outside of that.
well, since we are amongst friends, here is 7 seconds of full catless che exhaust, semi-solid transmission mounts, all rear insulation deleted, and no rear carpets. followed by 7 seconds of a set of nitto nt01's exceeding their slip angle ...
yeah, now i know why people dub in bad techno music over their track videos - so you can't hear all the idiot things they do with their throttle. with -insert preferred diety here- as my witness, i figured i could steer out of that, so got on the throttle anyways. yeah, those walls. regardless, i got luckier than this guy ...
Both feet in mother %&*$#@ and keep them there. That's what I used to say until I had a spin where I went both feet in hard and the abs came on and let me roll backwards across the track just like that even though I was mashing the brake as hard as I could. However it looked like the corvette just released the brakes and rolled back... It is a peeve of mine...
