Definitely take it to an authorized dealer. They will put it on the lift and give a 40 point (or similar) type inspection. Will cost around $100-$125. As indicated previously, unless the engine warning light is on, don't worry about hooking it to the computer - $100 not well spent.
If the car salesman will not allow you to do this, walk away from it. There are plenty more out there.....
