It's been a couple years since this post had a bump. I replaced the heater core today on a '99 and Meir's instructions are still the best. The dropbox links are still good and I've saved the .pdfs to my 986 folder. Thanks Meir.

My "new" 2003 Boxster

I'm picking foam flakes out of the vents in my "new" 2003 Boxster. I'll be using Meir's directions in a few months when the weather is cooler and I have more time on my hands. Thanks to Meir for great documentation.

Meir's method is the "Purest" method IMHO. For my 2003, I chose the shortcut method which just requires removal of the radio, HVAC and horsehoe and switches, although you do have to cut a piece of the plastic ductwork for the center vents and then tape it back together. It is documented by 78F350 on page 2 of this thread on the forum and in this YouTube video by TTGator.

Even on a 2003, the plastic interior trim is still 18 years old, and some of it may break taking it apart, so the less you have to mess with, the better. Plus you have to open up the cooling and A/C systems in the Meir method. So I'm throwing this out there in case you weren't aware of it and wanted an easier way. But if you're up for the full Meir method, I understand.

The issue with Meir's method is that it only addresses 1 of the flaps. There are 2. To do it completely you have to use both methods or just do it all through the dash.

Once you have the air box on the bench, and wide open, you will get access to all flaps from all directions.
With that said, I went thru all this trouble not to replace the foam on the flaps
The main reasons was to replace a leaking AC evaporator.
