As a new owner of a used 2001 Boxster, I am interested in this too.....

It's pretty easy. I just did mine because I had to replace a bulb. This is from the service manual:

1. Disconnect battery (so you don't electricute yourself)
2. Pop out emergency light button using two thin flat heads on either side (helps to push button on first so it comes out a little)
3. Pop out speaker cover (next to ignition)
4. Remove the exposed torx screws (one on each hole you exposed)
5. Pull assembly up until it comes out
6. Remove 4 electrical connections attached to back.

The rest is pretty easy. I think there are only two more screws to remove after you separate it from the car. There are also some clips which are easy to remove too. The two control knobs will come out if you pull. Make sure to remember where the needles are in case you move them. Assembly is reverse.

That's the instrument panel, it's just a small part of removing the dashboard.
