The 3.2L has the lowest HP/Liter of any of the company's water cooled H6 engines. However, don't let that fool you into believing that there is a lot of "easy" and "cheap" gains to be made. It's not going to be cost effective. On the up side, the car is "over chassis'd" rather than "over powered" which makes it forgiving.

The only time I want more power is when someone feels the need to cut me off or block me from entering a lane. These cars do not often endear you to your fellow motorists nor do they encourage courteous exchanges on the highway. For that reason, I wish I had the straight line performance to smoke that new Vtech Accord that decides to floor it to prevent me from changing lanes. I know better than to try.

True, I drove a friend's 1999 996 with the 3.4 and what a difference over the 3.2 in my 2000 Boxster. Such a huge increase with practically the same displacement. 2.7L 986 - 217 HP. 3.2L 986 - 250 HP. 3.4L 996 - 300 HP. Dang...
