Is that supposed to be attached to the front of the engine compartment around the opening into the car?

No part number. Based on its insulative characteristics, I too thought somewhere on the firewall. While I had the engine out, I replaced all the old crumbing factory insulation on the engine side. This looked way too clean, so thinking someone might just recognize it.
Thanks all...

My thanks to Quadcammer and others who took time to respond. The picture is really helpful and I will sort through my pile and put it all back on the car.
