Has this M97 engine single or dual row IMS?

Hi,
Im looking if to buy a year 2000 986 Boxster S but I would like to know it it has a dual or single row IMS bearing.

The vin is Wpozzz98zys643955, and the engine number us M96/2167Y11040..

Is there a way to know the options list?

Sorry, but you are out of luck on this. 2000-2001 was a transitional period where it could be either a single or dual row. The only way to know for sure is to pull the car apart and look; VIN and engine numbers are useless for this.

Just noticed that the original title of this post was wrong....should be M96 not M97....

Anyway....found some more info on how to decode 986 engine numbers.
Here is an example for a 2.5 engine....

20 is 2.5l engine; 6 is 6 cylinder; 5 is engine version; V is model year; and 00224 is sequential serial number.

Model years: v w x y z

v = 1995
w = 1996
x = 1997
y = 1998
z = 1999
0 = 2000
1 = 2001
2 = 2002


So according to above, this engine is 21 (3.2?), 6 cylinder, version 7, year 1998 and sequential number 11040.

Hence if single row ims bearings were installed starting sometime during year 2001...then this is a dual bearing engine.

Read what JFP in PA said. Read it again. The engine numbers do not matter. Any 2000 or 2001 engine may have either. I like to think that they are all dual row and will remain dual row until you observe them.

Sorry, but that information total crap. As someone who replaces them for a living, I can assure you that years of experience has shown that all the engine numbers, VIN's, build dates, or phases of the moon have proven time and again to be completely USELESS in determining which style bearing is in either the 2000-2001 or 2005 engines. You have to take them apart and look to know, period.
