What would you swap?
Okay, let's play a little thinking game. If you could swap any engine into the 986, what would it be? Let's assume that money, availability, workshop and etc are not an issue.
Just, what engine would be killer to see in a 986?

Is the rest of the car up to the task of the power you are proposing to put in the car?
Brakes?
Suspension?
Transmission?
Frame?
Cooling?

We don't need no stinkin' brakes!
Obviously we're talking about some pipe-dream scenario. Hence the "money, availability, workshop, etc not an issue"
BTW, wouldn't you have the same concerns with an LS motor, albeit not to the same extent?
Also, electric conversions have already been done:

There are some important questions, What year car? What additional parts are you willing to swap out? Anything other than a porsche engine will cost you in engineering or trial and error replacement. 2.5 and 2.7 replacement with bigger engines will take some transmission clutch and axle mods. (I have experience with this). There are thee versions of ECU at least, none of which are upward or downward compatible. All require harness replacements or mods, and ECU modification.
If I were to start over again. I'd get 3.4 Engine, transmission, ECU, Imobilizer, harness, Axles, sub-frames and axle carriers from a 987.1. Send out the motor to be sleeved to a 3.8L, with Carillo rods, JE Pistons, rod pins, and rings. Probably $15k to $25K. With the right tune I'd estimate at the wheels dino of 400HP +. The parts would hold up to the abuse and be reliable. They would be direct bolt in with no mounting issues or modifications.

If thats all the power you can handle, I would install a 4.0 litre M96 engine.

Yes. The 4.2 in the Maserati is a cross plane, however, as opposed to the flat plane in the F430. The Maserati 4.2's you can get off ebay for dirt cheap. The engines are really good, but the car had enough issues that they sell for nothing.
