Gasoline/Petrol Preference
After 8 years on this forum I know that a quick way to get a "discussion" going is to talk about oil or tires. However, I've not seen anything about gasoline preferences. Without getting too technical about additives, etc., how about some discussion about your favorite brand of gasoline and why. I prefer Shell simply because I'm a sucker for advertising hype, and my P car seems to enjoy it -- along with a regular dose of Techron. How about you?

I use Petro Canada Ultra 94 whenever I can.
The only 93+ octane fuel I can find locally.
Maybe it's just me, but I swear the Boxster pulls harder when running on more than 91 octane.

In Commiefornia, we're limited to 91, so I buy from whatever station I happen to drive by.

The cheapest 98 octane that I can buy - no allegiance to any brand but if I do have a preference it would be Shell purely because of their motor sport involvement since before the war.
But I do have a liking for Shell oils - I've use Helix Ultra 5W40 virtually since day one....

Only use 98, any brand but usually Shell because station is local and have Supermarket discount dockets.
I would be concerned about using less than 95 octane in any engine with 11 to 1 compression ratio,

Shell 98. My Box seems to perform better in this compared to other makes.

Ok, you Aussies and Europeans are just making this confusing 
To be clear, in the US and Canada, we use an average of MON and RON (M+R/2), Australia and most of Europe use only RON. MON is taken at higher RPM, so is typically 8-12 points lower than RON. In other words, M+R/2 measurement is usually 4-6 points lower than RON alone.
Our 93 octane is the same as your 97-99 octane

Thanks for sorting that out, I was surprised that there were no reports of holed Pistons in the US if you were using 91 octane in you Boxsters.

so from a european point of view: 
Normal/Benzin Bleifrei min. 91 ROZ 82,5 MOZ -> 86,75 AON
Super/Bleifrei 95 min. 95 ROZ 85 MOZ -> 90 AON
SuperPlus/Bleifrei 98 min. 98 ROZ 88 MOZ -> 93 AON
Shell V-Power 100+ min. 100 ROZ 88 MOZ -> 94 AON
Aral/BP Ultimate 102 min. 102 ROZ 88 MOZ -> 95 AON
And the car does also drive with 91 ROZ. ECU adapts that, no problem. But you loose some HP. For Germany SuperPlus 98 ROZ is recommended.

91 is the best we have here in Arizona/west coast. It's friggin annoying. I get my gas at any station who's gas is "Top Tier" and has the best price. That's either Costco, Arco or QuickTrip. The base gas is all the same (we get out gas from two refineries either in SoCal or Texas) and then each brand add in their additives.
If I want the really good stuff there's a gas station that has racing gas close the Wild Horse Pass race track ((Boundurant's Driving Schools is based there) which is 8 miles from my home.

Bleifrei? Is leaded gas still even available in Europe? In the US the term unleaded has been dropped some time ago to reflect leaded gas not even being available.

no, every of the listed fuels is unleaded today. Since 1988 leaded fuels are forbidden in Germany. Unleaded fuels were introduced in 1984. Ethanol added fuels E5 (5%) and E10 (10%) were introduced around 2009.
Normal 91ROZ and Super 95ROZ always has 5% ethanol over here. There is also Super 95ROZ with 10% Ethanol available. That is called E10.
There is also E85 available. Which means 85% ethanol. But you need an engine and fuel system that is modified for that kind of fuel.

This thread is somewhat meaningless...
Every state (almost) has different gasoline formulas.
And they also vary seasonally.
Not to mention other countries.

When i worked at Saleen & later Shelby American, assisting in the new vehicle EPA certification process, each company hired an engineer that specialized in EPA certification. Both engineers insisted nothing but Chevron Supreme went in the gas tank.
That's what I use, 91 octane in CA. When I drove my Box from CA to TX & back, I tried some Amaco premium 94 octane which made a very noticeable improvement.

93 octane from Costco. Includes ethanol so I only get 18-19 mpg.

Thanks for the details. Why do they still bother with the term Bleifrei still? It all been Bleifrei for almost 30 years.
