My understanding is that this is important... so no you cannot leave the suspension loaded...

Thank you both. I'll try to figure something out then. I'm guessing anyone that's dropped the transmission with a 4-post lift has used a sliding/rolling jack or similar?

I used a 2 Post lift. I have seen photos using 4 very tall jack stands. That way the car is level.
The Harbor Freight floor trans jack(scissor type) seems to feature in some but a tall hyraulic cart is probably better?

I used standard height jack stands from HF. I think I measured 17", but you will have to get the transmission to within 6" of the floor.
I used my floor jack. I drilled some holes in the floor jack pad and bolted a square of 1/2" ply 12"x12" for the transmission to rest on and used load straps to keep it from falling off. Worked perfectly and due to the fact that there was some slack/play it made jiggling the tranny back into place fairly easy.
I don't like jack stands either but nothing budged as your not pushing hard sideways on anything during this job.

HF sell 12 ton jack stands that raise the car up to 30"
I use a set of 4 on a diesel truck and regular cars. Rock solid and cheap(on sale)

The only issue I see with that is getting the car up to the lowest height of 19.5 inches. 6 Ton axle stands start at about 17 inches so you can get the car to that height using regular 2 or 3 ton stands.

I have 17" jack stands and ramps, so that's how it will be done. A lift is completely out of the question for now. Maybe someday...
Ordered the clutch kit last night, but it may not be here until nearly Dec., thanks to the holiday. I'm actually looking forward to the job. I can't wait to get in there and have a look at things.

I am finding conflicting info on the pressure plate bolts. Some show that a Torx bit is needed, others show a Torx socket. I'd hate to get in there and find that I don't have the right tools, so I guess I'll order some sockets (have bits), but curious what others have found...?

Pressure plate or flywheel?
The pressure plate is Allen bit. Not torx.
The flywheel is torx bit.

Ah, got it. The flywheel is T-55 Torx and the pressure plate is hex. I think I was confused because I found replacement bolts in both hex and Torx head.
Now, if only my parts would show up. I'm itching to get started!
Thanks!

All the info is at Pelican. Suggest you investigate Torx vs Triple square a.k.a XZN
The bigger cost issue is the requirement for a torque angle wrench. Pelican has a diy for the angle .
But ll this has been discussed many times :-).

Got it covered. As I noted, I've been through the pelican article (kind of rubbish) and already have the triple square bits. I just got mixed up on the pressure plate replacement bolts.

The hardest part for me was trying to undo the clutch slave joint. I think the hulk tightened it 😂
