Time for some brain washing to a true flat 6 sound.
It is disturbingly quiet for an open top car. If the Boxster Spyder came along and peeled away from a 718 Boxster (I already hate this name as I type it) the passengers in the turbo 4 would not be able to hear each other. If they carved the same canyon together one would definitely be jealous of the other's notes.

And Porsche have been really inconsistent about it to boot. The 911 got a redundant name, but the other step children did not.
That is until the Boxster came along but that was really only to hype up a new model but in a way that would strip it of its race history, which pre-dated that of the 911, so as not to upstage the flag ship.
So Porsche had to give it an all new identity to have it appear as an upstart.
And then they went fully redundant by giving the coupe version of the Boxster a different name even though it was just a variant! The Carrera Cabriolet and Carrera Coupe are still both Carreras but the Cayman and Boxster are discussed as if they are different models... Which is exactly what Porsche wanted because they intended to market the Cayman as a stepping stone car to upsell the buyer into the more profitable Carrera.
It's all clever marketing.
Numbering, labeling, badging, coding, is mostly used internally to track and maintain the evolution (read visions) of the products, PL. Don't be shy to ask your P senior officer about it. Not much all meant for 'clever' marketing reasons.

Something tells me that if they want to re-badge their icon 911 to 912X tomorrow morning and say this 912 flies they bloody well can. Guess what, the consumer will still buy.

Don't get too offended by these sort of these mate

Couldn't very well have remnants of "roadster" in the name for a coupe.

Cayman makes the Cayenne folks feel good.

... I don't think he has one. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if he's never visited a dealership. Not-that-there-is-anything-wrong-with-that.

IIRC, he bought his car used and would likely do so again (should there be a Spyder available, at the price, miles, options/lack of options, etc., that he is willing to spend) for the simple reason that "new" cars are poor investments, much like homes. I think he would also go to an independent for the PPI, but that is just a guess based on the venom I hear when he describes the company, the company's decisions, and dealerships. Maybe I'm wrong. But, I don't think so.

To be honest, I think the real question to ask is whether that 718 Boxster (I really love this name as I type it) owner would really care what the Spyder sounds like in the canyon. From what the current performance states on the Porsche website, the pdk 718S, with Sport Chrono Plus has better acceleration that the spyder (4.0 to 4.3 - as reported by Car and Driver when reviewing the Spyder).

Now, I don't know if these numbers mean anything, nor do I claim to know the performance of a 718 other than 0-whatever mph, and I'm sure that arguments may be had that the Spyder driver is surely a better driver because the Spyder is a "better" car, but... were it me(?) I wouldn't care about the noise behind me. But that's me. I usually go to the dealer and either build the car or may buy off the lot if there is something that interests me. Not sure heritage really factors into it or who won whatever race in 1973, but I'm sure I'm closer to the person buying the 718 than PL is, so, there you are. This buyer makes choices on what he likes, wants, affords, blah blah blah. Sure, there are people with better homes, faster cars, etc., but I don't live my life comparing myself to them, constantly. If I see a nice(r) car than I have, well good for them. Hope they are happy too.

Also, the canyons I roll in (generally) are one lane. Not sure if this is a common feature of canyon roads elsewhere, but I really haven't seen too many cars roll up to me and then peel out, unless they were looking to pass multiple cars as their life is far more busy and important than mine appears to be. Edit: Alternatively, I think many of the Le-Vel MLM people with their branded/wrapped cars that are oh so common in the MLM world I live in... would do that regardless of what there car is.

For the record, I didn't listen to the video. I did look at the pictures, though, so I am internet-certified to have a credible opinion about a car that isn't available.

Is this deja vu all over again?

Are we grousing the same way the air cooled guys did 20 yrs ago when Porsche announced it was going water cooled? Certainly less Internet traffic then, but probably as much venom. Porsche survived the drastic change.

Just for the record, I'm NOT a fan of a 4cyl turbo 718 Boxster or Cayman. When the time comes to retire my pair, I'll be looking for good used N/A 6cyls.

No those guys are just old and cranky. We are hip and young.

As far as the turbo four... No doubt the car will be quicker. And have better engine longevity to boot. But as far the subjective... I think I know what old Walter Rohrl was complaining about when he first drove the 718 and thought Porsche were doing a hidden camera prank. I think he asked the engineers why it sounded like a Jetta and if that was on purpose.

Edit:
meaningless. been warned that writing about Internet organized crime wasn't perhaps the most inspiring automobile-related topic :/ Was hard to disagree with so comment deleted lolll

Back to the intent of my note; I don't see anything 'venom' here if compared to some other forums on the Internet. Think 986f is pretty clean of that.

ps. me think cfos and PL needs to peace up, old stuff guys. PL, carry on with your usual Porsche bullying lolll We'll put you back on track if you go too far There are no other members here that knows his Porsche stuff like yourself, think I've learned more on the pcars from you than anyone else here/elsewhere

Gogo venom go!

Thanks, but, believe it or not, I really don't write them for you. I write for me.

As for "peaceing up", I appreciate the sentiment Nine8Six, but isn't this what the internet is really for (porn (car/other) aside)? I love the opinions expressed, however misguided, sometimes informative, generally amusing are. I mean, all this hub-bub about a manufacturer making something that the majority will never buy (directly). I cannot look away.

I don't drink soda, but it would be me complaining about changing the formulation to "Classic" Coke. Or, back in the day, if my parents gave me a hand-me down sweatshirt from my brother - Should I complain to Russell Athletic about their choice of elastic? Or the change in cotton/polyester mix? What about the McDLT? How did the "cold" side to remain "cold" when the whole thing was placed under a heat lamp...? Alternatively, I will say that I no longer consider Dr. Martens since they manufacture out of China for most of their products, but that's my choice. No complaints, filed, maybe a little sadness, but to be honest, I think I've aged passed their brand, anyway. Now, having said that, as soon as I realized my "German" car was a product of Finland... well, I traded up.

So in conclusion, and to answer Russel Crowe, yes, I am entertained. I think some here are, too.

Too far? Being critical of luxury brands really shouldn't illicit sympathy from anyone. These luxury merchants are paying us no mind whatsoever. In fact they pay no mind to those who actually buy their cars from the dealer either. Just ask all the truly big bucks customers who spent decades loyally dropping over a million dollars on one Porsche after another but were unceremoniously kicked off the waiting list for the hot new Cayman GT4 so that an even bigger fish (a 918 Spyder customer) could get one of those limited numbers of GT4s instead. "What do you mean I'm not getting a GT4? I bought all of your GT3, GT2 and 911 Turbo!" "Sorry sir we have too many 918 buyers who want one too. Please come back soon". LOL.
Anyway, Porsche drivers being critical of Porsche is long-standing tradition. Why stop now.

Oh and I have no issue with CFOS, for all the time I spend being critical of a faceless corporation, he spends posting criticism of forum members simply for having a view different from his own (or for misspelling their opinions... tisk tisk tisk). But this is all entertainment so it's all good. And for a Porsche forum we are all uncharacteristically civil.

One point we haven't touched on.....the pecking order has changed!!!!

With the new Boxster being priced HIGHER than the Cayman - we are no longer 'the entry level model'!

Anyone who has spent anytime over on that other Porsche Forum (starts with R) knows that that can be a touchy subject.

718 Cayman will probably fix that.

Is a base Cayenne cheaper than the 718 Boxster?

Actually, PL, preferred nomenclature would state: "tsk tsk".

The third "tisk" isn't really necessary. Nor is the "i".

Maybe the best cars have been built.

If you take a look at last CES and whats going on in the automobile industry with self driving electric cars and thousands of electronic gizmos there are less and less cars that will get you emotionally. Also emission laws do influent what will be built now and in the future. If you like the sounds of engines and like to drive a car without a ton of assisment systems it will get harder and harder to find one.

Would i call my box 718. Definetively not. It has a number that says 986. And that's a good number, because maybe the 987 is nicer from an optical pont of view, it's also softer - too much refined. And the 981 is maybe much faster, but it's not a pure Roadster. It's full of electronics that helps any idiot to drive fast. And the 718 sounds like a ricer. Maybe it's fast / faster, but it was the N/A flat 6 that catched me. So i'm happy with my 986 box.

Regards, Markus

Actually "cfos", that would be verbiage. Nomenclature refers to naming, particularly in scientific fields.
