You can do it in the car, BUT the passenger side (Bank 1) has less room than the driver side. I usually drop the exhaust and rear tranny mounts and then lower/tilt the engine to get a bit better access (it helps).
So much easier when the whole engine is out though; and you'll definitely want to do the vario-cam tensioner pads on Bank 1 (they seem to always be worse than the ones in bank 2)...
