What you are seeing is backlash in the ring and pinion gear. Have you checked the gear oil is at the correct level? With both wheels off the ground e brake off and transmission in gear, rotate one of your wheels, the opposite wheel should rotate in opposite direction if you have an open differential. If the wheel does not rotate then you probably have an limited slip differential and the clunking you hear could be the clutches engaging. Good Luck
