What did you find on CL today?

This one says it's purple, so I think it is Viola Metallic. Yes, it has high mileage and needs a little TLC, but it's VIOLA METALLIC. That alone is worth $5k or so.

How many miles is too many miles for these M96 engines? I found what may be a good deal but it has 172,000 miles. Everything else I see out there is around 60k-100k but most owners seem to be over asking.

What's over asking? Mileage is important but at the age these cars are at maintenance is much more important. If there is proof of maintenance throughout the years the the Boxster in question is likely a better candidate then a low mileage garage queen that has had little done over the years. Keep in mind there is no such thing as a cheap Porsche. You going to pay now or later with later generally being more expensive.

I bought my 2002 Red S with 194k miles on it last year. No maintenance records to speak of and the CEL on. Put 3k into the cam chain adjuster and drive it like I stole it. Still going with 204k miles now. Paid 5900 for it and keep up with my 911 buddies in their 40k cars!

The one I looked at this weekend was a 2002 Boxster S with 66,000 miles that he wants $12,000 for. The only records he had were oil changes from a Jiffy Lube type place. He said he bought the car from an auction and has had it for 5 years, putting 16,000 miles on it. He only has one key, no windscreen, and the tires that came with it. He has also never heard of an IMS bearing. I figure I'd have to drive it straight to my local Porsche expert and get the following:

IMS bearing
New clutch
Replace the rear main seal
Four new tires.

Then, I'd want to do the following:

Add the wind deflector
Replace the missing cruise control cap
Add a magnetic drain plug
Replace the dented spoiler cap
Replace both drop-down window switches
Order a new owner's manual (if possible)
Program a new key

I calculated all those to add up to about $5,500 - $6,800, assuming nothing else was discovered during a PPI.

I'm also hesitant to buy from someone who owned it for 5 years and didn't know they had a rear spoiler that extends at high speeds (I showed him how to put it up).

This does not sound like a 12k car. I'd expect A LOT of records from a caring owner for that price. Locally, this would be a $9-10k car at best.

That's more in line with what I was thinking. I told the guy a good set of records was worth a lot with these cars and his response was that he hasn't had any issues yet...

Yes, looking at Zenith Blue Metallic, I agree.... It isn't as dark as most of the Viola Metallic pictures.
