Will 15 inch rims fit on a base Boxster? The smallest rim ever offered was 16 inches on the base model. I know the 16 inch rims won't fit on an S, the smallest that will fit an S is 17.

Why would the diameter of the wheel matter, as long as the offsets are correct?

Small wheels may not fit over the brakes

My 15 inch teledials had the balance weights nick the upper corner of the caliper ... so it might fit - or not.

15 inch steel wheels might work then since the steel rim cross section will be thinner than aluminum, and a steel rim can use clip on rim weights.

What's it worth?

Saw this on CL. 1998 Boxster, California Car with 25K miles. New clutch, IMS, and RMS (original owner was a wealthy young lady who didn't know how to drive a clutch apparently...). Burned out the clutch and the car sat until owner #2 purchased it. Owner #2 did the clutch, IMS, RMS about 4 years ago... owner #3 had the car for a year, but only put 2K miles on it and is now "moving on". Owner #3 just had the car serviced and will be sending me a copy of the service and shop inspection report on the car (if I move forward, I will do a PPI). The brakes were at 70% according to owner #3, tire age is unknown, but likely installed by owner #2. He will get me date codes. Currently asking price is $13.5K.

I really like the condition of the car, and the fact that the IMS/RMS/Clutch have been addressed. However, there are a whole bunch of other alphabet soup items that have likely not been addressed, and this car is priced at the very high end of the scale (in my novice opinion...)

OK, sooooooo now the big question, what is it worth? I guess that is a bit like asking "How long is a piece of string..." but I trust your collective wisdom on this...

Shawn Stanford 07-11-2018 01:47 PM

The interior color is kind of cool, but other than that it's a silver 986 Boxster. Meh.

These things will run forever, so with the IMS done the mileage isn't worth a lot. The only thing that makes it more valuable is overall condition of the surfaces, assuming that even matters to you.

If what you want is a driver, then you can get them all day in Cali for $6k to $9k. Offer $9k and keep looking.

garv214 07-11-2018 02:03 PM

Hey SS

I appreciate a "well-kept" car. One of the things I like about this particular one is that the interior is red and it looks like it has not aged harshly... As with most cars, the paint will look better in photos, so I cannot comment too much on the paint quality other than there doesn't appear to be any major flaws....

In my opinion, without having looked at the car in person, I would guess-timate this car in the $10K range. As you have noted, low mileage isn't a huge financial windfall in these cars... but as these car age up and fall into the hands of owners (vs enthusiasts), condition will become increasingly more important...(in my mind at least...)

Shawn Stanford 07-11-2018 03:10 PM

Absolutely. If condition of the leather and paint is important to you, then spend accordingly. I wouldn't buy or pass on a car because the condition will be important to the next guy. I buy my cars to drive the hell out of them; daily and without mercy. A few dings, scratches, and scuffs definitely alleviates anxiety about taking them to the grocery store, parking them in the garage at work, or romping around on the track.

I totally agree. In fact, I believe that I may have employed a similar philosophy when I decided to date my current wife... ;)

Hey Jon! So what happened with this? Inquiring minds want to know. :D

Starter986 07-13-2018 01:43 PM

This is very, very rare. And only 160K on a rebuilt.

C'mon...enough with the sarcasm....don't you know THIS was the car the prototype was modeled after? Given the rarity, I'd be asking at least $5000 (OBO, of course).

Well... I figured that I could make space and time and showed the ad to Vi. She agreed (and I think I owe her a kitchen and bathroom remodel now).
I contacted the seller. It is still available, but he's busy and does not want to be bothered. ...and I may have contacted him one too many times before he made that clear enough to get through my obsession. :(

Still hoping he contacts me back soon, but concerned there may be a restraining order filed if I reach out again.

Now THAT is hella cool; if you live in Malibu, and lead a Malibu lifestyle. Meaning that you have more money than you know what to do with, and don't care where it goes.

Or live on the French Riviera, and have a rich sugar daddy. Or mama.

Just sayin'..............

Ya gotta figure a '69 VW Bug had to be worth something as is. Now it looks like 2 other cars got piled on top of it. How do you undo or even unsee that mess?

That's only $26 grand in real money. :D Are there two tariffs on Canadian Porsches? Foreign steel and foreign cars?

And that poor 69 VW is just plain hideous.
