How bad does a person's luck have to be for this to happen? A few hours of hard rubbing with Nu Finish Scratch Doctor set the world right again, but geez I was upset at the time.

A clay bar will save you lots of rubbing! The bar will remove overspray without much of a wimper.

For the next time!
