A FOB mystery

I have a 3 button fob for my 2001.

I can start my car no problem. However, the fob buttons only work sometimes.
My old fob that I lost used to work without hesitation. The one I am using now, when it works, works after I hold and press the button for about 2~3 seconds.

I have replaced the battery. I am currently using a 2032 that I bought from ebay. Is this a battery problem? (I am going to the RadioShack tomorrow to get a fresh battery.)

Also, if I remove the fob cover and press the small black buttons directly, should the buttons work?

Has anyone else experienced intermittent fob problem?

Thank you in advance.
