Rotella T6; (A Non A40-spec oil) honest opinion?

Hi All,

I’ve always had excellent results using Rotella T6 on my various other Euro Cars. Has anybody here had any long term exposure to it in their 986?
I’ve always appreciated the Zinc, and detergency of this oil, keeping my various other motors clean, while showing low wear numbers. Also fairly obtainable by me.

It’s not an A40 spec oil. But then I often hear that Driven DT40 isn’t either, and yet also gets praise. Would T6 be alright for our Boxsters? I’m not committing it to be my sole oil choice but it might be nice to use on occasion when available (I use it with other cars).

Car is a 98 Boxster 2.5 with 100k and new IMS and RMS, AOS, also new Cats.

Opinions welcome!

The T6 is a good oil, very high film strength and detergency as it is designed for diesels, which tend to be filthy internally. That said, the DT 40 is a better oil yet because it has very high ZDDP levels and also has an excellent detergency package. It is also the only oil on the market that was specifically designed for use in water cooled Porsches.

I use the DT40 in my '02 2.7. It hasn't had an engine failure yet, so how is that for anecdotal evidence?

The car is used for street driving and track days, and the car has 154,000 miles. I've used the DT40 for the last 4,000 miles, so the car (as far as I know) hasn't always used that oil..

I've used Rotella T6 in most of my cars - 986s, Cayennes, some VWs, and a Honda. I am not religious about oil and will occasionally use Mobil or Castrol if it's priced similarly. Before going to the T6, I read a lot on 'Bob is the oil guy' and various forums and concluded what JFP said.
Oil changes look fine and no catastrophic failures ...yet.

We are lucky to have a wide array of modern lubricants that all work well.

Pick your favorite and go with it. Just replace at a "reasonable" interval using a weight for your use.

Remember we are not running engines that only last 20hrs at best.

I rotella my cars, motorcycles. No problems with the stuff. I did use Castorol 20-50 in the H6 in my wife's old car, just cause the weight in Rotella seemed too low for SC's hot summers.
