This has earned a touché. Well said, sir. For those who want the savings and have the time, you have the option to DIY. For those without the time and/or maybe the desire to wrench their own car, or any other multitude of reasons, there are the experts you pay a premium to for the convenience of not using your own time to work on the car. I'd love to wrench my own car more often than I do, but I find that if the car needs something and I don't have the time to get at it, might as well let someone else who makes it their business to have the time do it for me.

I've found the Mobil 1 0w-40 didn't improve the cold startup rattle on my high mileage 2000 S. I was hoping that the thinner oil would hit the chain tensioner quicker and thereby eliminate the sound. If anything the sound is a little worse. It might be stopping a little sooner than before but I'm not sure. It stops within a second of the motor starting so I'm not too worried but the 0w-40 wasn't a miracle cure.

I don't think it was ever expected to be...usually people talk about moving away from Mobil 1 to get rid of the rattle on startup by going to a different oil. I'm running Motul right now, and the noise at startup happens less frequently for me now, usually only happens after the car's been sitting for a few days between starts, and goes away faster than it did on Mobil 1. But it could have to do with a lot of things, and I've yet to run the car on this oil during the wintertime to see how it performs.

Back in October said I would try Red Line synthetic oil. I purchased a case from Racer Parts Wholesale (best price I could find), and with my last oil change poured 9 quarts into the Jägermobile. The first thing I noticed is on cold starts there is no more lifter/valve train noise, which is something I would hear for about 10 seconds after startup, I still have a little chain noise until the tensioners pump-up but it’s much quieter on cold start-ups. I also notice it takes more time for the engine to come-up to temperature, which was a surprise. The next thing I need to check is how much ferrous metal is sticking to the magnetic drain plug when I change the oil next time (in a couple months). I will take pictures and compare with previous pictures/amounts when using Mobil 1, I will post those results. So far I am sold.

OK Danger, I just changed my Red Line motor oil and did a comparison of how much ferrous metal was on my magnetic drain plug as compared to using Mobil 1. I consistently change motor oil every 3500 to 4000 miles and ran my last oil change of Red Line 5W 40 running just over 4000 miles to make sure I had a good comparison. I can without a doubt say there is much less wear (less metal on the magnetic drain plug) using Red Line. There was approximately 50% of the ferrous metal on the magnetic drain plug as compared to the amount found using Mobil 1. I attached a couple of photos of my drain plug, one showing how much ferrous metal was on the plug while using Mobil 1 (this was a consistent amount found on multiple Mobile 1 oil changes), and the second photo shows how much ferrous metal was on the magnetic drain plug after running Red Line. Unfortunately I did not have my camera set correctly and my second photo sucks. You can still see the difference even though it’s a bad photo (I will have to make sure my camera is setup correctly next time I change my oil so I can take a better picture).

Jager, to track metal wear, try doing used oil analyses. I've done several on my car and other than the wear metals going consistently down since I got the car and did oil changes at 3k intervals, i haven't found one oil that is consistently better than the rest.

Jäger, I'm curious about what you see as an advantage of the car taking longer to warm up? Or maybe my question should be do you see that as an improvement or was it simply an observation?
I don't daily drive my car like you do, but I would personally want to see my temperatures reach optimum as quickly as possible so I can drive the car harder sooner.

I used Mobil 1 10w-40 high mileage on my 76k boxster last oil change. I was looking to buy Pennzoil Ultra 0w-40 but it was not sold at walmart.:ah: The advertisements claims it "cleans better" than mobil 1 so given the choice I'd pick that. Plus it's the official motor oil of Ferrari north America.

The pictures of the magnetic drain plugs are nice, but it means very little. The only way to know if your wear metals have decreased, increased, or holding steady, are with UOA's.

I agree oil analyses is the best way to determine metal wear but this was such an obvious visual difference I had to share. I have put close to 200,000 miles on my Boxster (car has over 228,000 miles on original motor) and I can honestly say Red Line motor oil is much different than Mobil 1.

It's just a simple observation. I agree, it would be best if the motor started at 180 degrees, oil is designed to perform warm.

If you can't find the 5 qt jug order it online for in store pick up. They dont seem to stock their shelves well for some reason.
I just switched over from 0-40 to 10-40. Lots of noise on start up. This oil thing is driving me nuts. Then again maybe 10-40 in summer and 0-40 in cold weather maybe the way to go for me.

Jäger,
Glad to hear you're enjoying Redline. I have had the same experiences as you except I can't comment on the warmup time (because I never noticed it). I have a couple of thousand more miles to do before I change out the oil and get an UOA -- I'm also interested to see what the Fe levels are.
