Engine swap: 2005 997s auto into 2001 986s manual

My 2001 Boxster S needs new variocams and other parts. At over 100k miles I don't want to put $3k in variocams, plus a ton of work pulling the head covers to replace them.
Instead, I have a line on a
2005 987s w/ 41K miles, auto trans. ENTIRE vehicle (front end collision) for 5K. I figure I could use the engine and sell the tiptronic, convertible top, decklid, fender, rear bumper cover, wheels, etc. I could also scavenge some suspension and other parts (coolant tank.) for my 2001.

Questions I need to answer:

- If I replace the 986s 3.2 engine with the the 2005 987s 3.2 engine, would I use the 987 engine wire harness, DME, ECU, immobilizer and anything else I scavenge? Will I need to re-pin the 2001 body wire harness at all, in order for it to go into the 987 DME, or can I easily use all the 2005 harnesses (harnessii?) I believe my 2001 has canbus of some sort.
- What mods will I need to make to reuse my manual trans (and clutch and flywheel) if the donor engine and associated parts are from a tiptronic? Are the engine wire harnesses different between the different transmissions?
- I believe I may need to use the 987 fuel pump and ABS module but that seems pretty simple.
- Without a hoist I managed to drop my 2001 engine and trans 2 years ago to replace the plastic chain rails and replace the IMS. This time I can rent a DIY shop with hoist near me.
In my mind having the entire 987 makes this project much more DIY friendly. What am I missing?

Main items to check first would indeed be ABS (do you have PSM now, what does the 987 have etc etc). Basically the 986 used two versions of ABS, 5.3 and 5.7. The 5.7 one will likely give you the correct CAN data for the DME, The 5.3 likely will not.

Other thing would be the DME. Get yourself a wiring diagram to check which DME you have and which one the donor has. Also, there is a good article on the 101 projects website / book on the compatibility of engines in the different model years. Give this a good read.

The short question: Can I move the engine, DME, ECU, wiring harnesses (body and engine), immobilizer, and ABS module from the 2005 987S 3.2 tiptronic to the 2001 986S 3.2 6speed manual body without having to repin or reprogram much?
