Stereo Replacement

Despite the awful acoustics of our cars I’ve decided to replace the OEM CR220. (Unable to find any recent threads). Looking for recommendations for a unit with phone connectivity and the ability to stream music that doesn’t look out of place in a 27 year old car. Mine does not have door speakers or amp. Also, are there replacement dash speakers that don’t require any cuts or mods?

A few questions...
Do you want to stay single DIN or convert to double DIN?
Do you want Android Auto or Apple CarPlay?
Do you want a backup camera?

Crutchfield. They sell kits and have a lot of P-car experience. https://www.crutchfield.com/m_266150/Car-Stereos.html.

Blue tooth adaptor.

I go for the 1/8" hard input but lots of people like the blue tooth. You can buy the 1/8" adaptor for much less.

Bluetooth harness

I installed a bluetooth harness a while back, and so far it has proven to be a good solution. I do not remember the brand, but I did buy it from Becker. It came with OE style connectors, all wiring, and a small microphone for hands free calling. The module fit behind the dash, mine is to the left of the radio. The sound quality is satisfactory, almost comparable to playing CD's. My 2000S has the 6-channel stereo package with DSP, but I dont believe it matters as far as installation is concerned. One must select the "aux" input function, and that's it. Mine automatically connects every time I turn the key when my phone is near by. It plays streamed music, as well as downloaded music on my phone, and reads directions through the car speakers when I use my maps program. The hands free function works well, interrupting the music for incoming calls. In my case, I have to slow way down or pull over for calls, due to the noise level at highway speeds. No fault of the system, but rather the inherent noise of my car. I drilled one of the blank switches to the left of the control bezel, and fed the microphone through the switch, secured with a dab of silicone. A small wind cover made of foam then slides right over the microphone. The convenience, sound quality, and reliability of this modification makes me think that it is a good solution for those that want to keep the car somewhat original.
Btw, some Etsy sellers have laser printed adapter rings for the OE Porsche dash speaker grilles, requiring only to remove the factory speaker, only requiring changing of the push connectors for the speakers. I forget the size of the speaker at the moment but they are readily available for less than 100.00 for a decent pair with the tweeter built into the center ( coax). I first had Pioneer product, but did not like the sound at all, changed to Rockford Fosgate. Better. but still not great. At some point I will upgrade all the speakers, but as of now it is pleasant enough to accept it as is. My musical genre is Jazz centric.

tools needed

I failed to mention that one will need a set of radio removal tools. They're cheap, and save a lot of headaches. In my case, however, even with the proper tools at hand, the radio was very hard to get out, it got stuck on some minor corrosion ( or dried cleaning agent) and just about made me get a chisel....but then it did let go suddenly, accompanied by a painful collision of my left hand with the wiper stalk. I am bilingual, so the cacophony of swear words surely would have been comical if broadcast.
