P030 Code
This code is resident on my 98 Tip. Has been for quite some time. Erase code... but it returns. Interestingly... it hasn't illuminated the CEL.
I've read and reread a variety of threads about the code, and am stuck.
I can pick up the Bosch O2 sensor for <$65. I'm thinking "least expensive" effort first and just plugging in a new sensor... see if the code goes away. I've a SMOG check due by June and want to get ahead of this.
Replace the sensor... see what happens. Yay or neigh?
Thank you.

No, parts swapping is a sign of not knowing what you are doing. What is the full code? What you posted is only partial.................

This is correct. Electronics are not my forte.
There is more to the code, yes. I was inspired to author a post, remembering the 030 code. I'll be going out to the car this morning and will post the exact code and such from my standard OBD2 reader.
Thank you, JFP.

OK. Code reads:
P0130 Pnd Mod 17
O2 Sensor Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1.
That's going to be passenger side, pre cat. Correct?
I'm running with your recommendation, JFP. Thank you.

P0130 indicates either a short circuit of the sensor wires, or limited voltage.
Fault conditions:
1. possible crack in sensor ceramic material
2. sensor reference air polluted .
3. Short circuit from signal wire to sensor ground.
Diagnostics:
Check the sensor values (using a tool like the Durametric software, read the sensor values to see if they are in normal ranges).
Test sensor wiring harness for shorts using a digital multimeter.
And yes, it is the sensor ahead of the cat on bank #1.

Thank you, JFP.
I'll check the condition of the ceramic.
I have a fairly decent multi-meter, though not schooled in its maximum use.
In your experience, JFP, when you've run across the same scenario as mine, what % of the time do you find that a replacement of the sensor solves the problem? I appreciate your candor, thank you.
.
Shout out to Gilles for all of his help replacing my transmission mounts... bracket not removed. His patience and attention to detail I found inspiring. Aside from the $75 muffler bolt... everything went not according to plan, lol. All sealed up then the 95 mile 57/60/10/62 trip home. Thanks, Gilles. See you soon.

With this code, maybe 15% of the time. The DME throws very specific codes when the O2 sensors either die or "age out", this code is not one of them. Most of the time we see this code, it is either a wiring issue or the DME going stupid.

Thank you, JFP.
I'll look into this, ughhh.
The actual CEL threw a couple weeks after I had the transmission RRR. At first it threw the light... I cleared it thinking it might have been an anomaly from the exhaust removal. CEL returned. Cleared it again after visually examining and not seeing anything extraordinary. Checked for codes a wek or two after that... and it's been resident, no CEL just the code, for a long while now.
Thanks again, JFP. Much appreciated.

Plugged in the new 02 sensor... started car... P030 gone. In seconds. I didn't have to clear the code... didn't have to drive/cycle it. The new sensor corrected the code.
Also... I noticed that the heavy gas smell, after the first start of the day, is absent.
Just an update.
Thank you, again, JFP. It appears I'm in that 15%.
