Get the Continental OEM-looking radio with bluetooth and CD, and find a good place to mount your phone. Something like a vent-mounted Kenu Airframe or a stick-on magnetic mount like "carmount" are good options. You will always have up-to-date Nav through the phone app

I would like to upgrade the speakers as well without spending a fortune.. which options are out there?

Unfortunately, this is an area which I don't have ANY experience (or clue) whatsoever, but would like to keep the OEM look, thanks!
I am not a 981 expert, but I believe it does not use a standard double din radio, at least not without some adapters/faceplate trim. I believe the radio has controls under the screen if I am not mistaken. I also believe it uses either the MOST system or some other variation of fiber optic cabling which would throw another wrench into the mix. If you are not up to speed on car audio, I think your best bet is to go to a shop, but I would expect to pay a significant amount, especially if you upgrade speakers as well. At least they can give you a good baseline.

Thank you all for the kind comments, after reading a lot of posts here and also on Rennlist and the Planet 9 forums, I am leaning towards buying a used OEM PCCM unit (from a Cayman or 911) that has the NAV option.

As Goldenzrule mentioned, it seems that my radio also interacts with other systems through the touch screen so I am concerned about opening a can of worms that I would not be able to fix by myself.. My abilities are 100% a mechanical person, as I feel very comfortable working with the entire powertrain, suspension and brakes systems, but anything electrical (or anything that is computer controlled I am completely on the dark)

I realized that I will have to buy the GPS antenna and perhaps an adapter harness, even as this setup may have obsolete technology, it may be the cheapest to integrate while keeping the console with OEM components.

I would be happy by having the NAV system and the ability to play my CD's as looking at the Goggle maps holding your phone is not the best option for me and upgrading speakers would be after the NAV unit.

Thanks again for your comments, they are greatly appreciated!

To each his own. I for one wouldn't buy something with 10+ years of outdated Nav info is that's what I was wanting. Hate to see the directions it would give.

It does have CarPlay so if you have an iPhone you can use other nav apps.
