1997 986 PO 706 error code.
Hey all,
Got a 97 boxster tiptronic with a PO 706 range sensor A circuit fault.
The car recently endured some very high water while parked in a garage.
Halfway up wheels or so. Dried out carpet and interior, removed sump and drained water and oil out. Let car dry for several weeks. Refilled oil and started car. Ran it for 5 minutes and drained oil/filter again. Refilled again and aside from some coffee colored water coming of exhaust (from cats) car runs ok. Drove it up and down the road a few times. Drained oil again. No CEL. Re-installed interior drove a few times up and down the street, and left it running with heater on for a few hours.
Now getting a PO706 range sensor fault. Car will not move but D and R lights flash on tiptronic indicators.
I know I will have to pull the range sensor off the tiptronic. Can this lead to car not moving at all? Is their not a limp mode?

The multi-function switch on the side of the transmission has been shorted out by the water.

I figured as much... but will this keep the tranny from engaging? Do they have a limp mode? Thanks

Yes to both questions, but when the electronics are shorted out, nothing may work as we have no idea what signals, if any, are being sent to the controller.

Changed out the range switch with a new one.
Car still shows in reverse when shifter and side lever of trans are in park.
Car will start if i put in N but will not move if I manually pull the trans cable from inside with engine running.
No more flashing lites.
Park lite does not come on if lever is in park. R lite is on and back-up lites are on at rear of car. I must be missing something..

You need to have the car scanned with a Porsche specific scan tool (most others cannot even see the Tip system) and see if the water has shorted out the Tips control module as well. I would also closely look at the harness connector at the multifunction switch; very little corrosion on those pins leads to all sorts of problems with that connector.
You may also now have a shifter cable adjustment problem because of the new multifunction switch, which requires disconnecting the shift cable at the in-car shifter, putting the transmission in park manually, putting the shifter into park, then reinstalling the cable at the shifter.

I have cleared the CEL with my Durametric..
I have found a local guy who has a Porsche scanner..do you know the procedure?
No CEL now..thanks

The Durametric system is fine, it can see the Tip control unit.

When I check the tiptronic connector in trunk:
Terminal 36---gnd should have continuity when trans in park, I do not.
I have the shifter cable disconnected at the shifter and push cable all the way in and still get R when tested for continuity at the tiptronic connector.
Their seems to be no adjustment on the range sensor as it is dowel pinned.
What am I missing?
Does the shifter need to be connected to the cable to "push" the switch to signal park?

There is no adjustment in the MFS, all adjustments are either at the shifter cable end or at the transmission lever.
Disconnect the boden cable at the shifter and trans ends. The trans end piece has a specification of 12MM for how far the cable end should protrude into the end piece. If correct, push the trans lever into park position and snap the end piece onto the trans lever. With the inside shifter in the “P” position, engage the cable in the open shifter adjuster and close the adjuster locking device. This set the basic shifter adjustment prior to testing the MFS circuit connections.

Ok here's where I am at now.
Adjusted cable as described still no park.
Disassembled again to get at the Range switch.(it's new)
Removed switch from transmission. Attached leads of multimeter to GND and Pin 8 of tiptronic plug in rear trunk No continuity...Pulled off range switch and carefully rotated the inner splines and yes I have continuity to Tiptronic plug. Assume wiring is OK.
Pulled rearward on transmission lever with a crescent wrench and tried to spin wheels. They spin. Assume parking pawl or linkage is pooched..Basically not going into park, because wheels don't lock up. Off with the pan?

Shifter mechanism (plastic) inside transmission has broken, not letting the transmission shifter slide back far enough for park..Had to remove the valve body to remove it. Part Number on it is 1056 327 070.
Anyone know where I can get one other than the UK? Thanks

Because the Tip is common to several makes (VW, BMW, Audi, etc.), and because Porsche is not very big on selling individual Tip parts, I would start with VW or Audi.
