I enjoy fun runs, some twisty roads, but not to the point that it's going to be a huge difference between the two. I've driven 911s, but not 996s. Either way, I want to hear from people that specificay trade from a 986 to a 996 to hear their thoughts on the differences, not people telling me a need an SUV. I don't. I have one. Or a need a sport sedan. I don't, I have one. All I want is opinions from anyone that has had both cars and can give me some real world opinions on the differences and how they worked for them in some real world applications. My mind is not made up yet, but I know I don't need to get something I don't need simply cause someone else is saying that is what I need. I will either stick with my 986 or trade it for a 996. People seem to think going from a 986 to a 996 is like stepping from a go cart into a 78 town car. That's just not the case (at least not with the 991s I've driven and others I've talked to that owned 996s)

If that's the case, then
A 989 is more nimble and frankly more fun to drive than a 996
The 996 does have ~60 more HP than a 986s which is really nice, but the 996 feels heavier.
For just having fun I would keep the 986

I am only speaking from experiences from 18 years ago, but at one time my household had a 986 and a 996 C4 at the same time.
The 996 was great, fast and extremely fun to drive, however the boxster while slower was easier to toss around.
I feel like the 996 just had too much bulk in the back, more of a GT while the 986 was a mid-engine true sports car that got lots of flack for being a "hairdresser" car.
I say if you just want a weekend toy, go for the Boxster and do not look back.

With the family? Do I strap them to the rear trunk or do they sit in the frunk?

WTF???
If you want to have more than 2 people in the car, then a 986 ain't going to work, you know that and why are you wasting everyone's time???

Goldenyearz, dood, I've read through your posts here and I'm sure of exactly two things:
1) I'm confused as hell.
2) you're kinda being rude to some respondents.
Reading all of this, it seems you've made up your mind what you intend to do, and now you're looking for validation.
But, and lean in really close here, as i tell you the secret; you're asking the wrong forum.
If you want to feel validated for ditching the 986 in favor of a 996, then go tell the 996 guys all about it. They're all really quick to assume that us 986 guys simply can't afford their gas; even when we're passing them at the racetrack. It hasn't occurred to them that the 986 is both the superior value AND and superior CAR. But they'll validate your feelings and tell you everything you want to hear.
Good luck!

Get a Miata. They've got a forum for that.
