Cruise control problems

Hello all,

So I was using the CC on the hi-way the other day. My exit is coming up so I press on the brake. Car doesn't slow down. Press it again, no change. So I hit the button on the stalk, car still doesn't slow down. Push the clutch in, car revs up to around 6 grand. At this point i'm halfway up the ramp. So I reach down and pull the pedal up. It makes a click sound and the throttle finally closes.

So what is the problem here? I need a new gas pedal? This is a 98 base with a cable throttle. When not in CC the pedal works normally. Good thing the brakes are good in these cars, since I had to slow down with the thing basically floored. Kinda scary.

I would start by taking the pedal apart to see if something inside is binding up. I would then work towards the rear and make sure everything is working properly in the back too. There's a pivot arm behind the driver's seat/ in front of the motor where you want to look and up by the throttle body. If those all check out, then I would suspect it's the cruise control box directly above and connected to the gas pedal. I recommend checking the other stuff first only because they're real easy and quick to check before you go trying to remove the cruise control box.

Ok thanks Woody. On a side note this happened early in the week. I tried the cc again on my way to work.today. Same thing wouldn't turn off. But this time when I pulled the pedal up I ended up poping the ball out of the back of the pedal.
