Cruise control problems

Hello all,

So I was using the CC on the hi-way the other day. My exit is coming up so I press on the brake. Car doesn't slow down. Press it again, no change. So I hit the button on the stalk, car still doesn't slow down. Push the clutch in, car revs up to around 6 grand. At this point i'm halfway up the ramp. So I reach down and pull the pedal up. It makes a click sound and the throttle finally closes.

So what is the problem here? I need a new gas pedal? This is a 98 base with a cable throttle. When not in CC the pedal works normally. Good thing the brakes are good in these cars, since I had to slow down with the thing basically floored. Kinda scary.
