It’s a 5 speed. A real garage queen. Not a nick or dent anywhere. Cars need to be driven. Sitting has a lot of adverse effects on a car. In any case it will have to go to the shop and I’ll have them go though and look for anything else that a car that has low miles might have. I did stop at the local Porsche specialist to make an appointment after I bought the car and wanted to see if they could find the squealing problem. But the first thing the mechanic asked me was about the IMS bearing. As far as I know it’s still the original, he said I should replace it right away. With everything I’ve read the 1999 had less of a failure rate. I’m sure I will replace the IMS bearing when I do the clutch, but right now I just want to drive the thing. I’m a little hesitant to use this shop but they do come highly recommend. Like I said the E brake makes the most sense, the cable might not be releasing completely or the brake shoe springs might be sticking. I will dive it today and get to the bottom of all this. I really appreciate all the input.

The Damn IMS thing
As I stated I have a 2000S with low miles 6 speed.
I will look at the IMS if I ever need to replace the clutch.

If your noise does not show it's self with the simple E-brake test then I think your back to possible wheel bearing issue.

Another thought I had was throw out bearing on a standard transmission but you should be able to make the sound change (once it started to squeal) by pushing the clutch pedal in.

Keep us in the loop.
I always like to know the outcome of problems I am trying to help someone with. Helps me learn more

I took my boxster out today and the squealing is coming from the emergency brake! I got between two buildings that were about 50 yards long and drove slowly next to them so I could make sure I could hear the squealing. It was not very loud but when I just pulled up slightly on the brake handle the squealing stopped. If I pulled the brake enough to stop the car it never squealed. It is only making the when the emergency brake handle is in the off position. I made an appointment with the shop now that I know what it is that needs to be fixed. Thanks for all your help.

Good deal you found it I wonder if it is a broken spring or if a pebble got in there?
Once you find out get back to us please. I like to know the root cause of things as well as outcomes
Thanks in advance.

I'm glad I thought of that and that you followed up.

I think its a broken return spring. If it is, the shoe will fall out and contact the drum.

Just strange that it had been to a shop for the problem and they never checked the E-brake as a possible cause.
Not to say all shops are bad. (which I am not saying that). But I never take any of my vehicles to a shop if I can possibly avoid it. I DIY.

I DIY as much as I can, which has been 100% for the past three years. I know exactly what has been done, what has been done, and every time I work on it I check everything that has been made accessible.

Consider how long it took anyone in this thread to suggest it might be the E-brake. It is a out of sight, out of mind piece of the car.

Just got the call from the shop. A piece of metal from the emergency brake did break off and was stuck inside the drum causing the squealing sound. It did ware a groove in the drum but not enough to replace the drum. A little over $400 to repair. I’ll have to wait a few days for the parts to come from Porsche. Should have it back in a couple of days. Still really surprised the former owner’s mechanics couldn’t find the problem. I didn’t understand how the brake assembly worked. Now that I know the emergency brake is a simple drum brake inside the hub of the disc it’s one of the first things I would have checked since driving and using the disc brakes didn’t effect the noise. Good honest mechanics are hard to find

Thanks for letting the forum know the final out come. It helps those of us who DIY get better at figuring out problems. Glad members here were able to help point to things to look for. Enjoy the car they are great fun to drive

Thanks for posting the result. Sorry you have to shell out $400 for something another mechanic missed.

Honest mechanics aren’t hard to find, but you need to qualify. The best approach is knowing your car. Read. Bentley manual. 101 projects book, pelican tech series online. I buy my own parts, my shops know me, I know everyone in the back and I do as much as I can myself.
Building relationships with the Indy shops is an important part of ownership.
