1 of 1 or Close to it?
Hi everyone, been a long time since I have posted. We normally do not name our cars, but this one is different. I got a PCA license plate (we just added them in TX) and the car is called LMNHED. I am a big fan of Lemonheads candy, so it makes sense. LMNHED even has a Twitter handle - #LMNHED
I found what I think is a very rare Boxster and I would like to see if the 986forums community thinks this could be a 1 of 1? Or if there are a few more like it. What makes is special is the rarity of options:
1. Factory Speed humps (although Porsche does not call them that...)
2. Painted center console
3. M030 suspension
Here is the factory build sheet / options:
2002 Porsche Boxster S

Yellow, humps, and M030 are all common options.

Absolutely 1 of 1. I doubt there has ever been or ever will be another with LMNHED for a plate. Seriously...... Why ask for the forums opinions if you don't want to hear any thoughts that differ from your own conclusions.

No. My car is silver.
I've worked for Porsche and been in the PCA since God was a boy. There's nothing special about your car that makes it a 1 of 1.

Thank you Gentlemen. Anyone who's actually a Porsche enthusiast or a long-term Porschephile truly knows what "rare" and "1 of 1" are. Some people just don't like to hear the truth.

I remember one that was posted from eBay a few years back. I believe that it's 1 of 1. More valuable for it? Probably not. Just harder to sell:
http://986forum.com/forums/boxster-general-discussions/57883-speed-yellow-nephrite-green-interior.html
This convinced me that some people see colors very differently.

^^ What he said. ^^
Search is your friend. If you go to this thread, the very first car is a... wait for it... yellow, 2001 S, with speedster humps..... http://986forum.com/forums/show-tell-gallery/28663-official-yellow-boxster-thread-if-youre-yellow-say-hello.html

What is supposed to be rare about it? Nice options, but nothing stands out as rare...
Nice looking car.

Are your roll bars painted yellow to match the car? That was always an option and I don't see it listed. To have a painted to match center console but not the roll bars would be pretty rare in my opinion. Unless that was part of the Design Package or the Sport Touring Package, I'm not familiar with those. You have a nicely optioned car. Most of these were ordered by the dealers who selected the options. So there are tons of combinations and in some respects lots of unique cars.

I can only speak for myself, but I think some of the comments you're seeing here display a similarity in our thinking.
Most of us are tired of the word "rare" being overused. Everybody thinks that "hard to find", equates to "rare", equates to "expensive", equates to "collectible". These are not interchangeable words. And yet, in so many eBay listings, Craigslist listings, classifieds listings, we see the word "rare", or the words "1 of 1" used when an inflated price is applied.
Most of us understand, that what you found, is a $8,000 car, if it's in good shape. Enjoy it for what it is. It will never be more than that. It will never be a collectible. It will never be considered rare. And it will never be worth more than about 8 grand.
With very "rare" exceptions. Haha!

Here is my cars option list. Pretty rare up in the backwater town of Winnipeg, but I figure there are dozens down in Texas, California, Florida etc.

Also, to get a sense of 'rarity' of any year, here are the production numbers by year.

This.
There is a "rare" "1 of 1" 996 that I keep seeing come up for sale over the past 2-3 years. It's has the X51 power package with sunroof delete, but that seller has been trying to sell it for about $40k for a long time now.
To the OP - don't get upset down the road IF you try to sell your boxster and nobody will give you $20k for it because it's "close" to being a 1 of 1. Speedster humps can be purchased in second hand market or aftermarket. M030 can be purchased as ROW and I see used US spec come up for sale every now and then. And one can easily paint their own center console.

This car just sold for $18,750.00 on BaT. I've seen the car in person, and it's actually striking and a well maintained Box.
I'm sure the newbie forum "experts" will now weigh in about how the buyer is a complete a......hole for paying this much.
Just sayin'.............

Hang on there, pal.....
Look below at the description provided us in the original post: Not a single mention of this thing being "pristine".. ... or perfect. All of the description, and even the very title of the thread, was about how ultra-rare it is, and how it's 1 of 1. Hell, he never even mentioned the mileage!
Now read the description in his listing on bat:
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2002-porsche-boxster-s-22/
Not a single mention of "1 of 1" or ultra-rare. Rather the seller focused on incredibly well- maintained, complete, low mileage, etc.
So I ask you: same car? How would we know from either description?
Yeah.... i'll give you that I was expressly "cheapening" the car.... because I get weary of all y'all who want it to be something it's not. But I watched one just SIT, forever, on the market in utah that looked every bit as nice as this one, and asking price was $8500. I should've bought it, then listed it on BAT, I guess.
As to the buyer? Nah.... I'd never call somebody a name for overpaying for a car because he fell in love and made an impulse-purchase. I've done it a dozen times. Nor have I regretted those purchases, because.... well.... I was in love.
So.... whatever dog you had in this fight, I guess he'll have to eat elsewhere.

Well kept 2002S, well optioned, best color, IMS/RMS/clutch done, low miles. Price seemed about right to me, although I would not sell mine for that.

Yecch, that is truly a pretty awful color combo. Of course, taste is subjective, but I bet most people would agree with me on this.

Have you ever broken open a rotten egg and found a yolk with those exact shades of green and yellow? I have...
