Yes, no one ever tried to hide that. In fact, when I bought my car, the Porsche dealer explicitely mentioned that this "is not an s2000", and went on to discuss the tradeoffs that you get for your decreased reliability.

I've owned 3 BMW's, 1 VW, and 1 Porsche now, and the Europeans will get another chunk of change from me when the Boxster dies, because the car just makes me happy!

I'm not saying the Boxster is perfect -- I would love a clutch that lasted 130k miles like that of my sister's Honda, but we all made a concious trade-off, and I don't think any of us should be shocked to find out that we're not driving a Toyota Camry that looks like an entry-level exotic!
