You're not being thick..Been a few years since I did this but IIRC, yes the retainer is behind the plastic piece you're trying to remove.

Basically, just stick your fingers under the forward, lower side of the decorative piece and pull out. It should release the clip and allow the trim piece to be removed.

There are now bolts or screws so just give it a tug.
