Anyone know how to...

I have been spending the past several weeks refurbishing my interior where I can. I have basically stripped off the dreaded soft touch plastic that scratches if you look at it and recovered in leather, "repainted" with plastidip or refinished with a nano covering. Only on one occasion have I broken the small plastic clips or hooks on the backs of these parts (knock on wood). However does anyone know an easy way to remove the side seat covers? I cannot figure out for the life of me how to get these off without totally tearing the things up. Maybe I just don't want to press my luck anymore either. Photos attached and any advise from someone who has done this is welcome. Thanks.......http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1493660728.jpg

Look at second post.

Thanks for the lead and great write up! I hate to be so thick but you mention in your second post...

9. Now al that is left to remove the seat back from the seat rail. Remove the plastic retainer from the decorative plastic side piece on the outside edge of the seat (side with controls). The decorative plastic piece just unclips after the retainer is removed.

I still cannot for the life of me see a retainer to remove on this piece. It simple looks like a flat plastic cover that would pop into a couple of holes. Is the retainer underneath it somewhere?

You're not being thick..Been a few years since I did this but IIRC, yes the retainer is behind the plastic piece you're trying to remove.

Basically, just stick your fingers under the forward, lower side of the decorative piece and pull out. It should release the clip and allow the trim piece to be removed.

There are now bolts or screws so just give it a tug.

Found some pics from my interior trim refinishing project, which might help you understand a bit better what you're dealing with here. I remember pulling up the front of the lower seat bolster. Then you can expose the hidden clips which reach forward along the seat. I can't remember exactly how I got them to release, but recommend exposing them so you can see what you're dealing with.

I'm sure there are sources on the internet on how this work, if you search. 996 Porsche uses the same seats and same trim pieces, so this is not Boxster 986-specific, it's shared by 986 and 996 platform. To get the front seat bottom to release, there are two plastic clips under the front edge of the seat that have one pin each that needs to be pulled out, before they will release and free up the seat cushion. That's where I think you'll want to start. No need to remove seats from car.

Edit: just looked at dghii's post. You'll want to perform step 7 - removing the white plastic clips from underneath the the front of lower bolster. No need to remove seat from car to do this. Then, you can work the seat covering up high enough to access the trip piece's foreword fastener. Pry out the lock pin, then pry out the remaining cylindrical tabbed piece. Be careful not to overstress, snap, or crack the plastic. Good luck!

Amazing how I wrote that and can't remember how I did it!

No worries, dghii, your post was helpful to refresh our collective memories!

Here's a relevant thread on another forum I remember finding useful:

My only additional tip, is proceed with caution on the rear clip. It found it to be surprisingly fragile. The abs plastic can be repaired, if needed, with abs plumbing pipe solvent-weld cement. (But best to avoid cracking or damage in the first place!) I remember struggling getting that rear clip to line up properly to be properly installed, far more than you would have guessed one should. So, just be careful, and may the Porsche gods be smiling upon you.

Thanks to both dghii and Jakeru! This was just what I needed! I don't feel quite so stupid after seeing how this thing goes on. Unbelievable at the way this was designed. I'll give it a go tonight. Again, you guys and everyone on here are great. Hopefully I can return the favor sometime.

Appreciate the post. Both of those pieces are broken on my car, and basically just hanging loosely with an improvised fix. This gives me hope I can access the hidden retainer and repair the abs plastic.
