Some areas are very scenic and the ocean tempers the climate somewhat. SE Mass might be a little cheaper to live, but depends on the community and proximity to the water.

Other than that, property taxes, sales tax, excise tax, and state income taxes make it tough to justify living here sometimes. Both are nanny states that you may not be used to coming from UT. Bottom line is come out here and spend some time (2weeks to a month) to really get a feel for the place and do your research on all the cost of living adjustments you will have to make.

Oh, and if you are a skier, forget everything you learned skiing in UT and buy a file for your edges :-)
